Any ongoing repression of the black community only exists in their heads. There is nothing structural in society that is keeping blacks down. We've had 2 full generations born and raised in an environment of full civil rights. They have had significant preference in the job market and in college admissions due to Affirmative Action. The major media is supportive of black causes. Vast sums have been spent on programs to help lift up the black community. Most cities with major black populations have black mayors, black city councils, black police chiefs, black school superintendents and so forth. City/State/Federal govt spending prioritizes giving contracts to black owned businesses.
What more do they want? If they choose to see themselves as something less than the rest of society, that's their choice. All I ask is that they quit complaining about it. That and quit blaming whites for everything under the sun.
The oppression is perception issue. Many blacks believe they are oppressed and probably see racism where there is none. This is the sad reality that was provocated by slavery and Jim Crow.
In the old days blacks had hope despite not being able to use the bathroom for whites. And now they have lost all hope, they can go anywhere and there are no visible walls to demolish. That Obama won the presidency means nothing.

Do you think someone like LeBron James spent his early life crying about oppression? He worked his a** off and, now, no problems.

That said, Neil DeGrasse Tyson mentioned that he experienced racism in college. He was never stopped when he went to and from the gym. He was questioned by UT-Austin campus police several times when he went to the physics building.
Being successful from hard work does not negate the existence of racism and bigotry. My father is an engineer with a Master's degree. Didn't stop stuff like being harassed by the police from happening to him. It didn't stop my brother from having to deal with racism when he was in college.
Where do you see in the whole 2 sentences I posted any words that lead you to conclude that I make any claim that racism does not exist? It boggles my mind when just 2 lousy sentences can be twisted around in someone's mind. I CLEARLY was making one point, that LBJ, and obviously many other African Americans, didn't waste their lives complaining about oppression, but worked hard to rise above it. Not one reference to racism or bigotry in my post.

BTW, Tyson, at 58, went to college in the 70's. I would think most people would assume he encountered more racism then as opposed to now. Imagine how much the OP would cry if he was in school back then?(I assume he is a younger man. Could be wrong).
If you read the article you will see Africans are not concerned with looking for racism and generally integrate into American neighborhoods that are predominantly white.
In essence the Aficans are more black than American blacks, but have a different perspective because they are not a product of America.
Do you know the difference between a zebra and a horse? The Zebra is fickle, distrustful, aggressive, and with high level of anxiety. The anxiety is so high that Zebras cannot be domesticated. Otoh, horses have less anxiety and can be domesticated.
A zebra is that way because it has to worry about predators 24/7. American blacks are like zebras. They are in a high state of stress due to reasons that are well known. That is why they become aggressive when confronted by the police.

You win the most absurd post of the day award. No one has been enslaved in the US for generations. African Americans are oppressed by each other, not by whites, not by the government. Blacks from Africa might do better because they don't whine, cry and make excuses for how poor they're doing.

Africans have been blessed to have generations being the majority in their lands, having ties to a homeland, and having their cultures in tact. It makes a difference to know that you can always go back home if you choose. It is a different experience and there is different motivation.
As for African-Americans, Jim Crow ended in the 1960s. There are people who lived during that oppressive time alive today. These are people's parents and grandparents who share their experiences. It is still relatively recent.
