Neil de Grasse Tyson is probably the most recognized face of science since Carl Sagan. He has an interesting account of driving while black.

I was stopped late at night at an underpass on an empty road in New Jersey for having changed lanes without signaling. The officer told me to get out of my car and questioned me for ten minutes around back with the bright head lights of his squad car illuminating my face. Is this your car? Yes. Who is the woman in the passenger seat? My wife. Where are you coming from? My parents house. Where are you going? Home. What do you do for a living? I am an astrophysicist at Princeton University. What’s in your trunk? A spare tire, and a lot of other greasy junk.

I've had worse and better. Was it my color? The moon cycle? What can I blame it on?

I remember hearing this a while ago. Most everyone gets pulled over, often questioned, not necessarily for a good reason.

There's proof that LEOs racially profile black people but especially black males. Your one off personal experience isn't' going to change that fact... But nice try...

Wade, I've never thought police were just pulling over thugs, or just Black people. Or just Latinos.

Even as a senior White man, I am no longer comfortable with the police.

And for those who REALLY read posts, in other threads many of us have complained primarily about inappropriate police behavior during stops/situations. For many of us the over-profiling of Blacks is an extra added issue.

And, BTW, Republican Senator Tim Scott has recently outlined inappropriate actions and attitudes by the Capitol police toward him.

Maybe Tyson will use his scientific weight to point out that "race" is a social construct and on par with the Easter Bunny.

BFD. AA's need to stop thinking this only because they are black. If a white person is driving through a bad area of town especially late at night they will get pulled over too. It has happened to me more than once.

Luckily the cops soon will stop making any stops. Instead of searching for the career criminals BEFORE they commit another major crime....they'll just respond with pen and paper after the fact. Yay!!

Oh....and newsflash: Career criminals, gang members, child predators and all the others....dont wear neon signs saying "Hey officer I'm the bad guy, ignore everyone else please".

To find a needle in a haystack you gotta move a few handfuls of hay.

But....dont worry....in massive numbers the cops are standing down. They won't say so necessarily. But soaring murder rates show it.

Doesn't surprise me. Similar things has happened to my father.

What race is the Easter Bunny? BTW, I've heard other crackpots posit the same ludicrous position as well. It is, of course, a falsehood.
