Prior military here... I'm against it for a simple reason: the budget and our misapplication of force in every war since WW2 (except Panama).
If one is to have a military, and believe in using it, use it to win DECLARED WARS, meaning total warfare. Or don't use it at all.
Disband the regular army, keep the Nat Guard/Reserves, keep the operational fleet and mothball the rest of the navy, keep the AF in the same state of readiness as the operational Navy.
Withdraw from NATO. Stop arms aid, instead only SELLING arms, and not anything designed in the last 10-20 years (so much, I'd have to go case by case on what we can and can't sell. EX: F16's, sure. F22, nope. M1A1 Abrams, yes, THAAD, no).
Will give presidents second thought on using our force via War Powers Act and Authorizations of Congress.
It seems countries with mandatory military service are more "socially" conservative than neighbors.
The Swiss are more conservative than French and German people. Koreans (North and South) more conservative than Japanese and Chinese. Russians, Turks, Mexicans, ... are similar.
Of course I'm talking about a correlation, not necessarily a cause. One reason might be it enforces gender roles and authoritarianism.
Singapore (which has mandatory national service) is not necessarily socially conservative than neighboring Malaysia.
Israel certainly isn't.
Look, the premise of universal military service having a bearing on "social conservatism" is really a weak hypothesis.

Singapore has much fewer Muslims than neighboring countries, which is a much bigger contributor.
But Singapore is more conservative than Hong Kong, to some extent.

Is mandatory military service the reason those countries are mores "socially" conservative than neighbors? Are the ones mentioned actually socially conservative?

May be a reason, may be a consequence of the shared cause, etc.
I said "more conservative". You are better looking than a chimp according to our standards, but that doesn't mean you are necessarily a beauty.
Finland has very strict conscription laws, and close to 80% of the age cohort serve either in the military or civilian service. I wouldn't count the country as conservative.
