Yes, black Americans are better than in Africa and yet when Africans migrate here they often earn more money than the descendant of slaves. I think slavery had an impact in American blacks.

Despite having more than other poor people in third world countries American blacks are behind the income level of many other groups. This can only be explained by slavery and Jim Crow.

In the old days oppressed blacks had optimism because there were walls that could be torn down. But, now the ball game is different. There are no more walls and the racism is mostly perception. Nevertheless, this erroneous perception becomes reality for many.
Black Americans are the richest blacks in the world. The media however refuses to show successful, middle/upper income blacks (outside of the entertainment industry). The only stories that are usually featured, are stories about poor black Americans. This leads everyone to believe that most black Americans are impoverished.

Conversely, white Americans rarely see media depictions of lower income/working class whites. Typically, the media only shows middle/upper income whites, therefore most just assume that the majority of whites are all successful and hardworking.

In reality, the media paints the illusion and the very uninformed public more often than not, buys into it.

How am I cherry-picking? I give you my views, others give you theirs. None of us have anything more to go on other than personal experience, experiences we have gleaned from listening to others, and whatever the media spins for us.

Just because you disagree with someone's point of view, doesn't mean they are racist or wrong no more than your disagreement would make you. I didn't say YOUR specific future wasn't better. I am referring to those who choose to believe that the majority of whites are still racist. If you share that opinion, then yes I believe your future could be better if you let it go. If not, then it doesn't apply to you.
I have said that I do not see whites as monolithic. That is hardly self-segregation. It is recognizing that reality is more complex than vague platitudes.

You are cherry-picking by suggesting that, based on unspecified observations or interactions from your life, that both black people writ large react to white people generally, and that white people, writ large, act towards black people generally as your interactions indicate. That is cherry-picking and generalization--it is fallacious.

I never called you racist (actually, I never called anyone racist). Rather, I recognized that white people have had (and continue to have) varying attitudes towards civil rights--attitudes ranging from support to indifference to opposition.

That's the main problem is that no one wants to step outside of there comfort zone and socially intergrate Veruses turning on FOX news and CNN to be culturally informed about different groups of people. The media never shows those images of blacks in this country.

They get more ratings off the negative side of blacks. Humans love negativity unfortunately black success stories would never get any ratings whatsoever.

Regarding slavery, do people feel that if other ethnic groups---say the
Chinese--were shanghied into slavery away from their families, they
would have the same problems America's blacks seem to have?
Or would they in their uprooted exile piece together important
elements of their ancient culture and become, even with harsh
discrimination, exemplary citizens? Are there any studies on
this matter?

African slaves came from over 45 African cultures. Slavery and witchcraft existed in Europe, Asia, South America...and?

The majority of Africa descendants who are products of the transatlantic slave trade, especially in the U.S., have no idea which or how many of the over 45 cultures they came from.

They cannot like point to a culture of origin, like the Irish. So no, the entire continent of Africa is not waiting for them. LOL...how silly.

American blacks come from over 45 different cultures, spread across the various West and Central African nations we know now. These are people who spoke a myriad of languages, professed various religions etc.

China is one nation. Vast as it is...not sure how comparable that is...

People need to quit interfering with the lives of others and focus on their own.

China is a continent with over 50 different ethnic groups and nearly 300 languages. We have to get beyond the idea that because people look the same to us they don't have any differences that sets them apart from one another.

The person I responded to suggested that the world was a veritable Eden of peace, prosperity, freedom and justice -- except in America where whites had black slaves.

If that was the case, then going back to that Eden and away from "awful America" would make sense, would it not?

Good reply by thriftylefty.

The above demonstrates yet again that the Left is obsessed with blaming white Americans and Europeans while ignoring the rest of the world -- and ignoring human nature and history in general.

Southerners had slaves... It was the white northerners who liberated them..
The Democratic party is the slave party...history cannot be erased..
It's inconvenient....
