Jobs were easier to find for black men in 1960? What jobs...shining shoes?
My mom worked for Fisher Body in the 60's and 70's in Cleveland Ohio. It employed thousands of blacks and whites. It was simply one of many places that did the same that are no longer there.
Detroit once had thousands of decent paying jobs that many blacks left the south for. They are no longer there.
This same story can be played out all over the country.
There is a common denominator that people keep missing.
Check this-How come African families that immigrate to America stay intact?
How come a large percentage of biracial children with black dads are OOW?
How come a very large percentage of black men are in prison?
Many will try and spin this on black women,but no.
The black American man is one of the most irresponsible things on this planet.
Lots of problems in the black community-----The violent crime rates,fatherless kids,etc go right back to the supposed head of the family...THE BLACK MAN
BUt like most weak men,they want to blame women for all there problems.
How do you know black families don't stay intact? Do you know of any personally since you're so certain? Please do explain.
A large number of black men are prison because of the the War On Drugs that usually affects the poor underclass urban black community more frequently than the your typical white American household. The US prison population almost doubled between 1960 and 2000.
Blacks and whites use drugs at the same rates, yet blacks are more like to be arrested, convicted, and jailed. Crime is linked to lack of social opportunity.
Of course the typical modern day African immigrant will more than likely have a stable familiy, they didn't arrive in chains to endure a life of forced labor. Arriving freely has advantages, do you agree?
The black American man irresponsible? Perhaps your overlooking the fact that most (for the majority of their history in the United States) probably don't even have access to the same type of jobs that whites have had. Or maybe you believe that this has had an effect on the black men you love to talk so dearly about.
Yeah, a lack of welfare makes people more productive and successful.
That's obviously why Americans are the healthiest people on the planet, being one of the few countries where healthcare is considered a commodity rather than a right.
Hunger is a great motivator. There's zero doubt that not getting food from government programs would put people back at their jobs. Welfare destroys the soul of a man. Rather than become a doctor or a lawyer or a garbage man, he can sit home on his PS4 and not have to worry about his next meal or how to pay the rent. He can have kids, lots of them, and know that the government will pick up the tab when he doesn't. It's very sad.

The out of wedlock birth for whites is is about 30%, for Latinos 53%, for Asians 17%, and for Native Americans it's 67%. Yet I hear no criticism of these other groups. These statistics could also mean that blacks tend to marry later than whites.
And no the Great Society did not cause high out of wedlock birthrates. It's not a black problem, it's a poverty problem.

MANY blacks have "obsessions" with white people , The National Association for the Advancement of Colored people, jess jacjson, al sharpton, obama, blm, etc. I could go on and on listing names and organizations.

The new welfare state LBJ created allowed "single" mothers to get housing and other types of welfare NOT allotted to married couples.
You can ATTEMPT to IGNORE history and the facts but, it won't work.
To get rid of the welfare society you have to provide an alternative. For many here complaining about the welfare society you will not support the very things we must do to end it. (yes I am generalizing here which I do not like to do).
We have to quit sending thousands and thousands of jobs overseas. There has to be jobs.
There are many who want a decent job but they simply are not available.
Very enlightening. On a positive note, the number of Hispanic children born out of wedlock has declined down below 50%. Traditionally they have a better sense of family than other groups. Hopefully that trend continues.
As shown within the OP, the out of wedlock birthrate for black people has always been higher than that of white Americans. However, today whites actually have one of the fastest growing rates, not black.
I am a black woman and I don't believe the welfare programs of the 1960s are the primary cause for single parenting or out of wedlock births.
As a previous posted noted, the stigma associated with divorce started to lessen in the 1960s (FWIW my grandparents actually divorced in the 1960s). The women's rights movement also grew which placed more emphasis on a woman pursuing other careers and activities in life beyond being barefoot, pregnant, and raising children.
IMO it was an entire cultural shift of the US and the world in general.
I will also mention that contrary to what many of you believe, a majority of black women in particular still get married and the vast majority of black children know their fathers. I was born out of wedlock and have always known my father. FWIW both sets of my grandparents divorced, maternal in the 1960s and paternal in the 1970s. Both of my parents as a result had a poor view of marriage based on being children of divorce. The idea of marriage being a given in our society just diminished during the 60s and 70s.
We should also note that prior to the implementation of the "Great Society" programs that a majority of black people lived in poverty and had very low rates of educational achievement. Today, even with out of wedlock births and single parents, crime rates are down, poverty is way down compared to that time (nearly a 180 degree turnaround), and educational achievement is up for black Americans.
So if you are going to "blame" these social welfare programs for less marriage in the black population, IMO you should also admit that lack of opportunity based on race from 1900-1970 was much more of a detriment to black people than the Great Society and the decrease in marriage rates of black Americans.

You might be young.......when welfare was presented whites were embarrassed to sign up. Matter of fact, in the 70's I knew people who disowned their white family members for signing up on welfare. People were ashamed to be on food stamps......why do you think they came up with the EFT visa card, to keep welfare people from being embarrassed. Now its a honor to carry a EFT card and present it proudly.

No it wasn't. It was to keep people from selling their food stamps for cash.
The black family survived slavery and Jim Crow but could not stand up to the Great Society.
The welfare state did not break up the black family.
