Based on history, the only effect I've ever seen from a 3rd party candidate is taking votes away from one of the 2 major candidates making it easier for the other one to triumph. So here's there Facebook video on Gary Johnson's page.
I don't think a 3rd party would stand a chance in this heated election cycle. Too many people are going to say "there's too much at stake". It makes it very easy for the elites to continue on with the charade. Just come up with a new distraction every 4 years to convince people that "there's too much at stake". That way, they will continue to vote for their demise.
Gary Johnson would hand out pot, and deal with the devil.
He's presenting himself as left and right - to get the most votes!
Not that Johnson is a true philosophical libertarian but....
A real libertarian will be both "left" and "right" to the authoritarian "left" and "right" in this country.
As libertarians always obey the non-aggression principle and never condone the initiation of force upon any individual, their "stances" align with the freedoms that the "left" and "right" think people should have.
Generally speaking the "right" agrees with libertarians economically and the "left" agrees with libertarian socially. But this is merely a coincidence. As the "left" are generally economic tyrants and the right are generally social tyrants.
Libertarians have a consistent foundation, the philosophy of non-aggression and maximizing individual freedom for every individual.
The "left" and "right" agree with libertarians on only certain issues because they have no consistent foundation for their "platforms".
Well they do have one, but not one that they would admit to (or even realize for some). The "left" and "right" both consistently believe that they have a fictional right to impose their personal will upon everyone else through violence, aggression, and coercion. So on the few items where they believe in human freedom and letting others live their own lives, they agree with libertarians.
So Johnson isn't playing both "left" and "right", he is probably just adhering to libertarian philosophy for the most part.
Note the Libertarian Party members are NOT necessarily libertarian at all...only a consistent stance and obedience to the non-aggression principle to maximize individual human freedom for every human being makes one a libertarian.
I think the country is getting closer to the acceptance of third-party candidates but we're not there yet.
But I think if any good comes of this election cycle, is it will encourage more people look for other options than the current two-party circus that our system has become.
Many Americans would agree with Libertarian domestic and social/fiscal policies, but the party just does a lousy job of getting their message out there.
It really would help if the Libertarian party could field some decent candidates, get some celebrity backing and for God's sake drop the open borders nonsense and ease up on the namby-pamby non intervention foreign policy.
Those two things are what keep me from identifying as a Libertarian, and they will keep Mom and Pop America thinking of the party as extemists too.

I always tell people to vote for whomever matches their political ideology best, regardless of their chance of winning. Unfortunately the VP pick is not even close to what I can consider a freedom choice.
