I still have a hard time picturing how it could happen. It's not like pulling the trigger. It takes time to do all this. Was he seated close by or rushed in from outside? You'd think people would react.
The typical reaction is to run and hide, not charge at armed men. It sounds like the mass was sparsely attended and some of the crowd were nuns.

Historically, yes, the various tribes warred on each other, raided each other, kidnapped & ransomed prisoners. However, pre-Koran, they weren't Islamic. Islam is what changed those people from ragtag marginal tribes into a much more cohesive society.

For now, for the West, the question is how to track down, ID & negate the Islamic jihadists who actually want to destroy the West physically, & how to avoid the present situation in the future.

ISIS beheading videos (along with old school al Qaeda videos) typically used nothing but a sharp knife. There's lots of sawing involved, but it's not as if they're trying to make it quick or painless.
A strong, sharp knife & presumably a strong executioner, & someone who knows their way around the vertebrae & tissues in the neck. No, I've never watched ISIS nor al Qaeda videos on the topic, I figure they lie to themselves to work themselves up to a killing frenzy, Why would they not lie to us? (& bear in mind that for a terrorist, shock impact is what it's all about.) Why lend them my attention, or my witness?
To my mind, there is nothing useful to learn there.
