Imagine how you would feel if you have a great skill that is valuable. And you and your skill belong to someone else, who profits from your skill while you receive nothing in return. Not even any recognition, and certainly no independence or liberty for you.
Skilled slaves often received better housing and food than other slaves, but they could not go out and work for someone they chose. Their wives and children could be taken from them and sold at any time, no matter how good they were and how well they served their master.
They could not freely take on challenging work, they could not make the critical decisions any craftsman makes, such as when to stop. They could not decide not to work when conditions were adverse and the work could fail or be of poor quality.
They couldn't go home to the wife and kids at the end of the day unless they had permission.
Slavery takes everything away from a person. None of us know just what that means these days. Think about everything you do, every one who is important to you, and everything you own does not truly belong to you. It can all be taken at any time.
And you can not only do nothing about it, you can't even walk away once its all gone. Your mind is another's possession, just as much as your body is.
Some slave owners who were black beat the crap out of their slaves. Bad people come in all colors .
It's not in the DNA of this country. It was ended 151 years ago. That's almost twice as long as the practice existed in the US. That's 6 to 7 generations. You don't hear other Americans bemoaning the fate of their ancestors who lived in the first part of the 19th century or earlier.
Your enduring obsession with it is the problem.
One thing the group who should complain the loudest are silent. Native Americans must be tougher and stronger than those who sit around complaining and going on about their ancestors.
Leads me to believe this fasciation is a movement about them and not about their ancestors.
While they complain about slavery they vote in huge numbers for the party that supported it.
The 13th Amendment, abolishing slavery, passed in 1865 with 100% Republican support but only 23% Democrat support in congress.
Silly to whine about something they themselves have not tried to change.

What in the world could this passage mean? Could O'Reilly really thing that how well a slave is fed is a cogent argument - that "cuisine" offered makes slave-holding less of an abomination?
Do some people really think slavery was some kind of entry level job with just a few "perks?"
What I think is that O'Reilly knows a whole lot more about history than you do. (Or are you also a published author repeatedly on the NY Times best seller list?).

What I think is that Bill O'Reilly is trying to downplay the horrors of slavery. I am the type of person who would rather be dead than be a slave. New Hampshire state motto is "Live Free or Die". I take that literally.
No, it isn't "kinda wrong," and you might be surprised about the design/blueprints because many black slaves were very skilled artisans and craftspeople.
The problem with the "living conditions" conversation is that it is a distraction and completely beside the point, about as clear as an example of a rhetorical red herring that folks would be able to find.
The White House was, in fact, as M. Obama stated, built by slave labor and ingenuity.
Not to mention a black was also in the team to help plan the design of the city of DC
He WASN'T a slave. There were many free Blacks at the time (including the FIRST legal slave owner in the American Colonies), though you'd never know it given all the race pimps' ridiculous whining and hand-wringing.

Slavery in and of itself is an abomination. Whether a slave was poorly treated or well-treated in no way qualifies the abomination as good or bad. Slavery is bad. The concept that another human being is so inferior that they are sub-human, which is the fundamental belief that allows human beings to be treated as chattel, is bad.

In fairness, if you put what he said into context, he wasn't arguing anything close to pro-slavery. He was sort of defending the actions of the government 200+ years ago but was mostly just giving an honest assessment of the events. Some slaves and some non-slaves were those building the White House. He points out that the slaves were well fed. While he probably shouldn't have even added that for his own sake, it's most likely true. Some slaves were treated relatively well, as far as slaves go. Some were not. Regardless, slavery is bad, but I can at least appreciate the slave owner who feeds his slaves and gives them reasonable housing far more than the slave owner who doesn't.

Your "published author" just remarked that the government stopped "hiring" slaves. In what version of history are slaves "hired"?
