Yes smash and grab isn't murder , but as the article mentioned the victims are often working people that are out $500+ .

"a great many “smash-and-grab” car burglaries are perpetrated by repeat offenders who are given light sentences by judges who don’t see the crime as a particularly serious offense."

My house was broken into a few years back and I was told by the police department that even if the person was caught , it's likely not much would happen to them. It was weird to hear that. I think the police is just really frustrated with the stupid decisions that politicians and judges set forth.

That doesn't stop certain departments from going after those people. Not all PDs are hippies and pacifists.

Not sure exactly what they mean by this? Should we be softer on crime? Not put law offenders in prison?
It's harder for them to vote (D) with a criminal record so of course they want to put fewer lawbreakers in prison.

AS far as I can see it the biggest problem with the American justice system is that it is almost totally political in nature. Now, we all know that nearly 100% of politicians are either corrupt in some way or another or compromised in countless ways, beholden to their financial supporters, owe favours to many, etc. Therefore when the mojority of your law enforcement officials are elected politicians you have a huge problem before you even start. DAs need convictions for political reasons and if it's some innocent that gets railroaded, that is still more politically attractive to them than no conviction at all. I can not even imagine the concept of elected judges. It's just insane. Take the politics out of the justice system and you stand a chance of obtaining some justice for both victims and criminals. To outside observers the Supreme Court of the USA is some kind of horrible joke. The law of the land should never be decided through the prism of partisan politics. One just has to consider Citizens united to understand the court is nothing more than a hack political court that does not find according to the law or the constitution but for purely partisan political reasons.

The Democrats' solution to most problems is based on an attempt to appeal to the overly emotional outcries of their increasingly childish voter base. They don't even care if their proposals have any merit. They just spout them to get elected so they can milk the system as long as possible.

I think the problem with the criminal justice system is that many criminals are serving less time for crime.

Is this just a reaction to the RNC convention message of "Law and Order" and DNC is trying to 'counter' that position?

This is Hillary's position

"End the era of mass incarceration

Today in America, more than one out of every 100 adults is behind bars. This mass incarceration epidemic has an explicit racial bias, as one in three black men can expect to go to prison in their lifetime."

___

Whose fault is this? The tax payer? White people? What happened to do the crime , do the time?
Anybody else worry that a Clinton presidency will be soft on crime?
She is also basically saying that cops are racist too. How could police officers really support her?

My Political ideology is, to repeal all victimless legislation, laws and restrictions.
Police would be unarmed and only there to investigate harm, or theft, after it happens.
The natural laws of mankind, would be the law of the land, with no one getting a hand out from the government in any way.
Governments job would be to break down barriers, restricting liberties and to hold records of private property, while coordinating the State Militias in time of distress, against the free state of unlimited liberties.

If I ever ran for an office in government, it would not be to govern anyone. It would be to free the people again.
Who in their right mind would vote for me, thinking I would govern them like mommy did?

Fact: US has most people incarcerated in the world - almost 2M ! This is a huge burden on many levels.
It is more than China (population 1.25B), India (population 1B) and Russia.
Here are 2 questions:
1) Why are more people in jail (in this free and democratic country) than in the most populated countries on the globe?
2) Conservatives often complain about big government and huge budgets. Do they know the real cost of the correctional system to the US taxpayer? Or they think it comes free?

They know it does not come free but it makes billions for their friends who own the prison industry. Conservatives always do everything they can to transfer wealth from the avarage taxpayer to the 1%. That is their default position and everything they do or say should be viewed through that lens.

How many haunt the halls of corporate prisons, for victimless "crime"
