In America today, salt of the earth workers are forced to compete with slave labor from the prison industrial complex earning 10 cents an hour making products for the biggest companies in America.

How are workers supposed to compete against slave labor? What can be done?

Pay the inmates nothing and work them on chain gangs

I have zero issues with prison industries providing products that reduce the costs of their incarceration...food clothes maintenance..anything and everything...prisons could and should be entirely self supportive as much as is possible... There is no need for bloated contracts with suppliers

Perhaps you could give some real world examples of what you speak of....then we could comment upon how to fix it if we have good alternatives

I'm interested who these salt of the earth workers are? Union employees?

First off, no one should be in prison for crimes where there was no victim ( such as drug crimes). Secondly we are all slave laborers. Try keeping all the money from your labor if you so doubt me.

Corporations & the Prison Industrial Complex:

Quote:
...Private prisons are the biggest business in the prison industry complex. About 18 corporations guard 10,000 prisoners in 27 states. The two largest are Correctional Corporation of America (CCA) and Wackenhut, which together control 75%. Private prisons receive a guaranteed amount of money for each prisoner, independent of what it costs to maintain each one. According to Russell Boraas, a private prison administrator in Virginia, “the secret to low operating costs is having a minimal number of guards for the maximum number of prisoners.” ...

Salt of the Earth workers possess something that is stripped of the prisoner... Free will. The worker is free to migrate to the best paying job opportunities, while the prisoner is stuck doing whatever work is made available to them.

I really don't think you will find too many workers who would argue that the prisoner has any sort of advantage over them. If they thought that to be true, than they might be tempted to trade places. I doubt there would be many takers.

To compete with the foreign manufacturers, if hardwood flooring was milled and prefinished here, most of the labor was done by Prison labor.
Anderson Hardwood, now owned by Shaw Industries, is one of them still using prison labor.

To compete with that, Mohawk hauled in 1000's of illegal aliens from Texas, to Georgia. and got a slap on the wrist.

"Fair trade" works when you have trading partners that do not employ slave labor, erect impartial barriers to imports, and "dump" government subsidized cheap goods on the market to destroy competitors.

This is why NAFTA and China trade policies are so flawed. Free trade agreements with Europe, Canada, and the Pacific Rim nations which are led by democracies makes sense.

This is why anyone with an ounce of grey matter left should oppose Hillary- she will double down on NAFTA, China trade policy, and push through Pac Rim and further kill the middle class.
