For those who were alive at the time and remember how Iran was before the ousting of the Shah and the Ayatollah Khomeini (Shia) took over, Turkey (Sunni) is going the same way.
I remember a secular western-like Iran. I remember Iranian college students wearing jeans and looking and acting just like American college students, males and females.

Turkey is about a strong man taking power in a nation cowing before uncertainty and outside threats. He is using religious and ethnic divisions to promote his ascent. See the pattern there anywhere else?
As for Iran, life was so joyful and lovely and free under the Shah. Take heart, oh fearful rightie! Iran is tilting back to a more secular, democratic country every day. Your kind of right wing thinking is dying off with the older generation much like it is in our own land.
Moral of the two countries (and more including our own)? We are better when the right wing nuts are under the earth instead of on it.
