If you are interested in influence peddling, check out the Congressmen. The retirement is better than being an officer in the military. That is where the money is.

Or even being governor. Rick Perry has always worked for some Texas agency He gets retirement from more than one. Plus all he could scam. Bet Gardisil paid him a bunch to say all young girls in Texas should get the shot. Then, there is the drug testing for all welfare recipients in Florida and the governor whose wife owned the company. Then there are all the lobbying firms and think tanks who 'hire' the spouses of politicians. The list just goes on and on.

$200,000 fees for public speeches for starters.

I'd have to agree with speakers fees and book deals for both.

Back then, no one paid big bucks for speakers. If they had, Truman might have been able to cash in.

Thus far the winner of the highest speaking fees award goes to Trump / $1.5 million followed by Reagan/ $1 million.

Bill is a distant 4th place.
$750,000 is not that distant from $1 million. Who was in 3rd place?

"The Buck Stops Here" was on President Truman's desk in his White House office. It must have worked.

Truman was an honorable man.

I got the book for Christmas and it was one of my favorite gifts.

Harry Truman’s Excellent Adventure: The True Story of a Great American Road Trip

They left the white house without any secret service and no pension other than the pension the President got for his army service which was a monthly $112.56.

He and Bess drove around the country stopping to eat in lunch stops where more often than not nobody recognized the couple. Just two senior citizens having a bite for lunch.

Tax History: Harry Truman's Tax Returns Have a Story to Tell

Quote:
When Truman took the train home to Independence in January 1953, he took few of the trappings of office with him. In those days, former presidents received nothing in the way of retirement benefits: no Secret Service protection, no administrative support, and certainly no money. Presidential pensions did not exist.

But if President Truman was left to sink or swim, Colonel Truman was entitled to a regular check from the government. In return for his military service during World War I (and subsequent years in the Army Reserve), Truman was guaranteed a pension of $112.56 a month.
I would also add Truman was the last President not to have a college degree but I consider him among the most honorable people to ever hold that office.

Plain Speaking on Snopes

Mostly true

Quote:
After President Truman retired from office in 1952, he was left with an income consisting of basically just a U.S. Army pension, reported to have been only $13,507.72 a year. Congress, noting that he was paying for his stamps and personally licking them, granted him an "allowance" and, later, a retroactive pension of $25,000 per year. When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don't want me. You want the office of the president, and that doesn't belong to me. It belongs to the American people and it's not for sale."
You got to salute someone like that.
