Why can't we stop doing things to their countries that make them need a safe zone?
Stop it. They've been in a civil war since the 2011 Arab spring uprising. Before that, there has been almost constant upheaval in the form of revolts and fighting between the secularists and the hardline old school rulers. The photo in this link shows what much of the country has looked like for forty years.

Three letter answer: oil.
Long story short version: the better to take (privatize) their oil reserves (open up to foreign investors).
This is the thing, ISIS wants to do the same thing but for an allegedly different reason:

Are you crazy? Creating safe zone in Muslim countries. That makes too much sense.
Why would Leftist political parties give up such a great opportunity to bring in thousands of voters.
Who cares if Islam is the most illiberal ideology. Who care if 50+ Muslim countries are hell-holes for Women, LGBT, and Minorities.
Just take these Muslims and dump them by the thousands across Western cities. One thing you can always depend on Muslims to do is vote for the Leftist Political parties, and in turn these Leftists come running and screaming to defend and apologize for the death cult of Islam.
If they stop importing all refugees and set up a refugee camp in their country, I wouldn't mind donating some money.
At least that would be better than bringing them here to compete for jobs and resources against our own citizens and we wouldn't have to put up with cultures that aren't compatible with ours.

I was trying to explain that America did not start this refugee problem. The fighting over there has been going on long before we showed up. We are not to blame for every ailment on the planet, despite what some believe.
