I knew it was just a matter of time -- while at work today I encountered a young woman wearing a black T-shirt that proclaimed "Haters, be Quiet".

The people who coined the buzzword "hater" have never mustered the responsibility, nor the courage to define exactly what that word represents; deliberately, since it can be used to target anyone who dissents from their elitist view, as the fickle winds of politcs change.

It was Voltaire, the first great champion of what came to be called the Enlightenment, who first voiced, and in several variations, the standard "I disagree with almost everything you say, but will defend your right to say it." Apparently, that sentiment has little appeal among the radicals who have hijacked the Democratic Party.

One wonders how soon the refrain "Haters, be Quiet" will devolve into "Haters, be Gone" -- and the usual crowd will be seeking more power to carry out their plans.

"O liberty. what crimes are committed in thy name." (Madame Roland -- an early supporter of the French Revolution -- and a victim of the Terror)

The meaning of the term "hater" is morphing into "someone we hate". It's like "fireman" in Fahrenheit 451.

"You're a hater!" is equivalent, to me to, "You're a big poopyhead!" It sounds childish. The first time I heard it was in this forum and I asked the poster how old they were.

Hater was a hip-hop slang term. It USED to mean someone who was jealous/envious of something that you were doing, so they would try to bring you down in order to feel better about themselves. As usual though, stupid kids (or just immature people in general) have distorted the definition to now mean "someone that disagrees with me". Let's look at some examples of how this word is misused:

1. "You don't like my shoes, so you're a hater." (Maybe I just think your shoes are ugly as hell; you can't really be jealous of something you don't desire)
2. "You don't watch Walking Dead, so you're a hater." (Seriously, someone called me a hater for not watching Walking Dead)
3. "3 times 2 is 5, and anyone who disagrees with me is a hater." (Eventually it will get to this point; I'm sure students are already calling their teachers "haters" for correcting their homework assignments)

When you introduce this term into politics, you then get people being called a "hater" for pointing out valid criticisms of Obama, Trump, HRC, or whoever else. Hater then morphs into "bigot", "racist", "misogynist", "xenophobe", "homophobe", etc.

Do you use the word "hater" a lot? Seems like this thread touched a nerve.

Nope, it isn't a word I ever use. I was just wondering about the thread title. I see t shirts that say all kinds of things but never thought that they were demanding anything from me.

Yes, "hater" was always a silly word. A better example of PC vandalizing the language is "hate", a term that journalists writing in leading newspapers now use to mean "a view on race, ethnicity, immigration, gender, sexual orientation, etc. that we don't like".
