It bothers me because people try to impose their hypocritical morality upon others including me.
You want to eat a dog then eat a dog.
Just don't attempt to serve it to others unless you have told them it is dog meat.
You wouldn't want to impose your hypocritical moreality on someone else who is unaware.
I think it comes down to "personality". Our dogs have distinct personalities. So do our cats. And my parrots. On the other hand, some other bird species have no apparent personality, so they are less valued as domesticated pets.
My family doesn't eat chicken with head on it, all my friends are like that.
...
Yes, that can be a deal breaker. Some of my Vietnamese friends once invited me to a Chinese restaurant that was very "old world". My chicken dish came out with the head and claws and combs still on. Kinda ruined it for me. But that's our own psychology.
Anyone who would consider it acceptable to kill and eat a creature capable of unconditional love is morally bankrupt not to mention deeply evil.
Some cultures don't look at creatures that way. When I worked in a Chinese restaurant the help used to cook authentic food for the workers. Not Americanized food. I saw some pretty strange dishes.
Ok I'll bite, who are these people criticizing you for wanting to eat dog AND making it a moral dilemma?
Aside from a joke, it's never come up around me.
How does this go down? You're walking along with your buddies, you see a cocker spaniel and say out loud "Man, that would be some good eatin' with teriyaki sauce and noodles".

Name one animal that doesn't have any personality.
