I don't think there should be licenses for doctors much less cab drivers.
Uh, I'd like to at least be assured that I'm being treated by someone who has training, not a quack. Similarly, I also would like to be driven by someone who knows the laws of the road, too.
Given their minimal ties to New York City that won't bother them much. And that is at the heart of why I like language requirements and attachment to the new country. I do not want a bunch of people here who are one Facebook click away from returning to their native lands, and have one foot here, one foot somewhere else. I don't want the native hatreds and rivalries brought here. Or the honor killings.
If they won't learn English, they're not going to move back just because they can't drive a taxi. They will just go drive for Uber instead.
You misread my post. What I am saying is that tickets don't bother people much who have minimal ties to their adopted or part-time homeland.
Ok, I understand it now and more or less agree. I would just say it depends on how committed they are to staying in this country rather than how many ties or how close their ties are.
Knowledge of the English language is no longer a requirement to drive a cab in New York City. To me this displays utter contempt for the majority of people, in order to appease various political or block leaders. Similarly the picture below illustrates an attitude that "English speakers need not apply.
I have no problem in accepting immigrants or integrating foreigners into the work force. I do believe they should learn English, for their own good as much as for the benefit of the rest of society. I don't believe that foreigners should be at the mercy of self-appointed representatives or pot-stirrers.
I also believe that as a member of the traveling public, when I use a regulated carrier such as a taxi or mass transit, I have a right to be served in English.
