During Desert Storm I was on the Missouri. After several weeks of shelling Iraqi positions, we pulled out to the Gulf of Oman to give the crew a break plus do maintenance on equipment. As we exited the Straits of Hormuz several Boghammer boats came racing out to intercept us. I don't know what deranged mind sent theses boats after a 60,000 ton battleship but the CO was in no mood to play. He was heard to say on the bridge that if these boats don't give way he will swat them aside. He ordered one of the 5" gun mounts to fire an illumination round and ordered no2 turret to train to port and load high explosive. The boats kept coming on despite repeated requests to not interfere with innocent passage. He claimed over the radio he will engage them with the main battery. They ignored him. He ordered one gun fire to fire and it roared out with a big blast of flame from the muzzle. A monstrous water spout erupted in front of the lead boat but they kept the course. He ordered the other two guns to fire and those two rounds straddled the boats. One boat reversed course. The first fun fired again and the shell landed ten feet in front of the lead boat. The CO announced over the radio the next rounds would be on target. The five inch gun mount fired another illumination round and the boats reversed course. Oddly enough, the ammo logs and ships deck
Logs did not record the expenditure of those rounds. I was s Navy Quartermaster and I kep the deck logs and that incident never was recorded.
Bad example. The last time they tried to be cute when Reagan was in office, this is what happened.
BS meter is pegged! That's not a USN vessel unless it's a target ship...
The US hasn't ever lost a ship in the Gulf. The flipping Stark didn't even sink nor the Cole ( which wasn't even in the PG) Your Small boat action History lesson for today is to study Operations Ernest Will, Prime Chance, Nimble Archer and Praying Mantis.......
"Is there anyone left in the world that the US hasn't pushed around?" Surely you meant this?
Valid question...Israel comes to mind. Israel pushes everyone around via US proxy.

No, that was a ship which was hit by US planes after the Iranians blew a huge hole on the side of a US ship.

That would have been Praying Mantis, USN attacking the Iranian frigates Sabalan and Sahand and oil platforms in the Sirri and Sassan oil fields. The two side effects of Earnest Will – Praying Mantis helped convince Iran to agree to a ceasefire on 18 July 1988 and a permanent end to hostilities on 20 August 1988, ending its eight-year war with Iraq. On 26 September 1988, the USS Vandegrift escorted the operation's last tanker to Kuwait. The remaining SEALs, patrol boats, and helicopters then returned to the U.S.[15]
If this kind of incident means the Navy is a joke, then it must be Reagan's fault since that is when the Iranians began these games, and they never ended.
They ended in 1988 following Operation Preying Mantis, then, in January 1989, Reagan completed his second term and left office.

Great sea story but obviously a sea story. A 16" HE round will kill everyone within 100 yards just with the shock wave let alone the fragments of the casing.
I applaud the Captain for avoiding the confrontation. You do not win chess matches by capturing every enemy pawn.
