The United States officially recognized Kosovo -- the Balkan state which split from Serbia on Sunday -- as an independent nation on Monday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said in a written statement.
"We congratulate the people of Kosovo on this historic occasion," Rice said. "President Bush has responded affirmatively to a request from Kosovo to establish diplomatic relations between our two countries."
European Union nations Monday were also starting to individually recognize Kosovo as the world's newest nation -- but had not agreed collectively on the way forward.

I wonder if this is how Bush would feel if, say, Texas or California were to declare independence.
Or Vermont.
The EU is split on this issue. Countries like Spain and Greece see this as a threat because of regional and ethic regions within their countries. Russia and China have already stated that they will veto their admission from the UN.
If we had a better diplomatic standing in the world perhaps we could work this out. But we are weak and discredited on the international stage.

Exactly. This was an insanely stupid move on the part of the US. Recognizing Kosovo gives legitimacy to ANY secessionist movement the world over. The sh#t's gonna hit the fan on this one.

But see, the current administration has shown they have no interest (and probably no ability) to understand or comprehend the wider consequences of our policy in the wider world. Most Americans are not sophisticated enough to think about this either; all you have to do is talk about "freedom" and wave a flag and people support it.

Please - this was the decision of the people of Kosovo. And, I would bet, they understand, more than anyone else, the risk they are taking for freedom.

He's talking about the US recognition of Kosovo's declaration of independence, not Kosovo's decision to declare itself independent.

Oh, so they fought a revolution for this "freedom?" They currently have an army to protect their country and stand up for their sovereignty?
They are taking no real risk. They have our military muscle along with the rest of NATO. So it's not really their decision. Do you actually think they would have been allowed to take such a move without some prior approval from the US?

Yes, I do
And, as for risk - being invaded by Russia is sufficient risk -
