Humans before us saved the race by burning down and sealing off entire towns to prevent the spread of horrible diseases. These days from ebola to zika we seem to put not offending people ahead of stopping disease. Has science advanced to the point where we no longer need the time-tested quarantine?

Yes DC should be cordoned off ASAP and all its communication severed with the rest of the planet.

Do you have Ebola? No? Do you know anyone who had ebola? No? Do you know anyone who knows anyone? Well?

The response to Ebola worked. The professionals actually knew ht they were doing, imagine. And the people running around yelling "The end is nigh, shut down everything!" - you know who you are - didn't help one single bit.

Yes, but should we keep throwing the dice?

You act like we don't remember what happened. Why do you progressives misrepresent the facts so much? Oh wait... we know why..
I completely remember what happened.

The fearmongers were running around screaming at everybody to panic and shut down the borders and institute quarantine before thousands of people stateside were infected. Oh and by the way, this yuuge disaster they were dreaming up was/would be Obama's fault. Important bit, that.

Meanwhile, actual professionals with decades of experience - the CDC, the editors of the NEJM, that sort of people - were trying to inject some fact and reason into the discussion.

Now as it happened in the real world, we did not get the thousands of state-side cases and city-wide devastation that were so eagerly being imagined. The experts were right. And the amateurs, for all their demagoguery, were wrong.

Should we keep doing what has been shown to work? Hmmm, tough call.

The WH didn't do proper quarantine and diversion of flights while the rest of the world was. The CDC screwed up in its handling of the issue which led to nurse being infected.

Those are the facts.
You have a problem with Zika in that 80% of people infected show no symptoms at all. How are you going to quarantine them when nobody knows they have Zika? Test 18 million people in Florida? Stop all travel to and from there to other states? They are US Citizens, as are those in Puerto Rico.

Actually, no. This was debated extensively at the time, even on this board. There were no direct flights to "divert" between Ebola risk areas and the US. Duncan arrived on a flight from Brussels.

That would be nurse Pham, correct? As it happened in real life, the hospital she worked for either didn't have or didn't issue the proper gear. Ebola guidelines are on par with other highly infectious diseases, and it's not the CDC's job to go through the stockroom of hospitals. The CDC tells hospitals "This is how to deal with Ebola." The Presbyterian Hospital Dallas said "Whatever." Which is why they're being sued.

Ehm - not really.

And as you may have noticed, the devastating Ebola outbreak that was so breathlessly imagined - didn't happen.

Now we are on with the Zeka issue which the CDC suggested travel restrictions when the issue first came up and the WH has still not acted on such.
Hm. I follow this sort of thing pretty well, but I do not recall the CDC recommending such. There has been warnings and notices for travelers issued, certainly, but an official recommendation for government to ban/restrict travel? Do you have a link?

Well, nurse Cham - not "the nurse", she has a name, and if you want to use her as a lectern, wouldn't it be polite to use it? - seems to have another recollection of events.

Texas nurse who contracted Ebola sues hospital chain - CNN.com

But what does she know? You read all the local papers.

Sure. It's not as if we have experience with other haemorrhagic fevers and how hard of a time they have spreading in the US. (Hint: We do.) It's not as if the predictions of the actual experts and the outcome in reality matched.

As for hunting you down exact links, forget it, your above comments have already shown your devious nature in this discussion.
So - no recommendation of travel restrictions from the CDC. I'm not really surprised.
