The New York Times The New York Times
The mayor’s sudden decision to raze the complex, which is run by the East Chicago Housing Authority, and close an adjacent elementary school turns on its head a plan the E.P.A. has had since 2012 to remove the contaminated soil without displacing residents.

“They show all the signs and symptoms of lead poisoning — they vomit randomly, have headaches,” said Ms. Allen, who said she had signed on with a lawyer. “Nobody’s given us any advice other than give them foods high in iron.”

Ms. Allen said that she would like to stay in East Chicago so her children can continue at their school, but that she would probably have to move.

“Nobody wants to answer our questions,” she said. “They just want to give us a voucher and send us away.”
Their Soil Toxic, 1,100 Indiana Residents Scramble to Find New Homes

The EPA is another totally worthless -DO NOTHING government organization. All Americans should demand that every single government organization be closed immediately and all those thousands of slackers-PAYCHECK THIEVES be put in the unemployment lines, since none of them are actually working in their phony "jobs in name only"!

All that money should be awarded to all the people who have lawsuits against this corrupt government!

Normally it is the republicans saying that the EPA is too strict, we must shut it down.

Now we are hearing that the EPA is too lax, so we must shut it down.

At least it's a new argument

The EPA is too incompetent, that is why it should be shut down.

Almost since its inception, it has become a partisan department with too many extremist kooks trying to push agendas.

So when the government pollutes - it's OK, the good government will clean it up.

When the private sector pollutes - it's evil big business and it must be stopped.

Got it.

If you bothered to read about the topic.. you'd see it was a private firm that polluted the land. One of two firms -- Anaconda Lead Products, and U.S.S. Lead, Inc. -- both of which are dissolved corporations. Their assets and liabilities are held by DuPont and Atlantic Richfield, who are being sued for cleanup costs.

See, when private firms pollute, then go bankrupt, then the taxpayer has to spend money litigating and/or cleaning it up. The magical "hand of the free market" seems to be mysteriously absent then.

Oh c'mon. I'm a Democrat but that comment seems unfair and untrue. Republicans are not exactly "The Ecology Party" but you can't put partisan blame entirely on them for this.

The housing complex was built on top of the bulldozed former site of Anaconda.

What idiot approved that decision? Right! The government.
