'An investigation in 2014 by Peta, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, found that dogs were being used for leather production, and called on Americans to forgo the purchase of any leather goods and to instead only purchase vegan substitutes. The U.S. imported nearly $8.5 billion in leather goods in 2014."
"The US banned the importation of dog and cat fur and skin, which is punishable by fines up to $10,000, as part of the Dog and Cat Protection Act of 2000. But distinguishing dog and cat leather from cow, sheep and pig leather is no easy matter, making it possible for unscrupulous manufacturers to pass off leather from dogs as leather from legal animals."

Animal discrimination at its finest!!!!
Animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others!
EDIT: it's amazing what they can do. This is genuine leather, it just didn't grow on a cow or other animal. Read the article. This will open up so much more flexibility in the use of this material. This is part of the burgeoning "x without y" series of industry ventures -- others include wine without grapes and mother's milk without breasts. Through a combination of molecular manipulation, a form of transmutation, 3D printing, genetic manipulation of bacteria and fungi, and other cutting edge hacks of the microscopic world, we will be able to create genuine materials and items without the conventional drawbacks.
I'd boycott because China didn't make any efforts to save their now extinct river dolphin.
My other new boycott is Mexican grown Hass avocados. The farmers there are cutting down the pine forests in order to illegally expand their avocado orchards. And their pine forests are where the Monarch butterflies winter in.

"unless you don't mind it being made out of dog or cat skin "
Who cares?
No difference then a cow, rabbit, racoon, or any other animal.
The PROBLEM is, some want to treat animals like cats and dogs, like humans, and they are NOT!
I believe that Wickett-Craig in Curwensville, PA is the last leather tannery in the USA if they haven't closed down. The USA was once the world's leading exporter of all types of leather.
There might be no difference between a cow, a pig, or a dog, or a cat. But If I ASSUMED I purchased a leather jacket made out of pigskin, please don't sell me a leather jacket made out of dog skin. Not really rocket science.
