How is that possible, since so many people are employed.

Do you go to low in or high in restaurants? In my area waiters/waitresses working at high in restaurants make well over 100,000. And how do you even know their party affiliation. Don't tell me you actually ask them

Depending on source, the average age of a first time homebuyer is age 33-35.

There are more single first time homebuyers than ever.

Each generation has been delaying marriage and children throughout the developed world.

Millennials are ages, 19- 30 something- a way from peak marriage, parenthood and home buying years.

It's NY, you don't have to ask.

And we recently dined at Peter Lugers in NYC where the wait staff is rumored to make $250,000 a year! It felt like it after I paid the bill (but OMG it was worth every penny).

Not likely going to teach most 40- 50 somethings new marketable skills.

Most people have never had the aptitude and discipline for seriously skilled work. This is certainly not unique to the US. This does not mean people did not work hard.

What happened to people who took responsibility for themselves and relocated to geographical areas that were hiring and did so on their own dime?

No one was poorer than the rural South and Apellachia who relocated by the millions to the Midwest for industrial jobs with collective bargaining agreements. These wages/ benefits/ pensions eventually became uncompetitive in the global market. Technology substitution took care of that.

New York has very high in restaurants and $250,000 doesn't surprise me. And Peter Luger is a steak restaurant which costs an arm and a leg lol

I don't know about $250,000 but they do alright. In my former career, used to do private room dining with 10-12 customers at a time. Gratuities were typically in the $500 range and this was mid 90's - early 2000's.
