Call it socialism or anything you want (sticks and stones). The American people like SS and will continue to support it. It's the law of the land. Like it or lump it.
While you may have to have a TIN, as was mentioned, one does not have to have a SSN to work. Also, there is no requirement that one sign up for SS. And, IMO, there are millions who do not either pay into SS or, recieve same.

If you are an American citizen and you work for wages in the United States, with very few exceptions, you must have a SS# to work. Your employer must withold SS contributions from your pay.

I'm out of DC all the time, but Manassas isn't on my list of places that I will voluntarily go. But regardless my statement stands. With a few exceptions, if you are an American citizen who works for wages here you must have a SSN.

Actually, you must have a TIN - and in some / most cases, your SSN is that TIN. Then again, for those who do not have a SSN, they have a TIN and SS TAXES (not contributions) are not taken from the gross pay

If you are an American citizen an iTIN won't do the trick. That's only for aliens. If you are going to work for wages, you need a SSN and your employer will withhold. It isn't optional.

Sorry to disappoint but, you are incorrect.
Not all Americans have a SSN. Some, such as myself, have a TIN - when I do tax returns (personal) it is the TIN that it goes under. When I pay income taxes - it is, once again the TIN. When I recently got my "Statement" from SS about my "benefits" - it was my TIN listed (showing I had no benefits coming) and $0.00 paid into SS or Medicare in over 35 years.
Yes, a TIN WILL DO the trick. I'm an employer. I have several staff with TIN's. Fed witholdings according to their declarations. No SS TAXES taken out. IRS questioned - and their questions were answered - and IRS says fine.
