A US drug company has increased the price of an acne cream by more than 3,900% to $9,561 in less than 18 months in the latest example of drug “price gouging”, which has enraged the American public and become a central topic of debate in the presidential election campaign.

Novum Pharma, a recently formed privately held Chicago-based company, bought the rights to drug Aloquin in May 2015. The 60g cream, which contains two cheap ingredients, was sold by its previous owner, Primus Pharmaceuticals, for $241.50.

Now, $10k a tube - Chicago, no surprise!

This is free market gouging which the government should be protecting us from. There are certain markets which need to be regulated; primarily when a company has no competitors and a reliance on their product - drugs being at the top of the list. These companies are gouging prices to people already suffering.

Repeal Kefauver-Harris and then you can greatly reduce patent protection time.

The problem is you are looking for answers where none are likely to be found. The government could have addressed all of this long ago but have not.

Despite the gnashing of teeth, they have no intentions to either.

You're preaching to the choir. We all know Big Pharma has the FDA and politicians in their pockets.

ACA was never meant to actually be affordable. It was designed to fail to get the government into a single payer solution, which they couldn't have passed if they were honest about it.

The government is as corrupt and dishonest as it has ever been, regardless of who owns Congress and the White House.

We need government controlled health care. Who opposes this? The Republicans, of course! They are always the problem when it comes to the well being of Americans.
This is counter productive. Hillary isn't for government controlled health care. The only that is left that is, is Jill Stein.

That's silly.
No one is going to pay $10k to get rid of zits.
Pointless.
If no one pays, the drug is useless.

I'm not sure this story or the details are correct.

In Colombia you can get A rated dental care college and European trained for the fraction that dentists in the USA charge. In fact I had a visiting dentist fix 3 of my teeth and a cleaning for $300 without having to use crowns when my American dentist said I needed crowns for them $700 each (with insurance). He did a porcelain set for someone else for $3000 when over here they want 3 times that amount.

I love the USA its great in many ways but it isn't always the best on everything.

When US consumers aren't legally allowed to buy medicine from other countries and when a few corporations dominate the market because it's so difficult for anyone else to get competing products to market due to extreme government regulations... yes, there is.

They're price gouging because US patients are a captive audience.

Is there nothing that the left won't pull out their partisan soapbox for?

Of course the government needs to REGULATE some things, they DO NOT NEED TO CONTROL THINGS!

Yea, look how the well being of Americans were looked after when the POTUS had full control of congress for two years. All we got were lies and a HC program that the INSURANCE INDUSTRY WROTE!

Now, after they are failing when they expected this never ending windfall, they are pulling out of their own program!

Take off your blinders and come to terms with the fact that the political class as a whole are corrupt. ALL SIDES, YOUR SIDE, ALL OF THEM!

Hell! In Canada people can buy Tylenol with Codeine over the counter. Not only can we not buy drugs from other countries, but the government won't even allow us access to OTC drugs.
