I live in VA so I'm not surprised. Definitely sounds fishy. Many a DUI case has been made by dash cam footage of drunks falling on their faces. You would think that right there would mandate no obstruction of dash cams.
Off topic story: I grew up in Fairfax County, VA (just outside DC) and in the 60s, the County police would set up radar a few houses down from mine. Us neighborhood kids used to go hang out at the speed trap...it was very entertaining! There was the radar car and several motorcycles. There was no portable radar then. They put the business end of the radar on a tripod and ran the wire to a display on the roof of the car.
The radar cars were Ford Galaxies with 428 engines that had to be idled to power the radar unit. If it was hot enough, they would indeed overheat. So they would pop the hood a few inches (not wide open) and they said it helped. Back in those days, there was no coolant with high boiling points...just water which boils at 212 degrees. A very common summer refrain was, "I boiled over!" Every late fall weekend, you could see many people filling their radiators with Prestone anti-freeze in a metal can.
Anyway it was great fun....the cops were really friendly and didn't mind at all 10 or 15 kids hanging around the speed trap. When I started driving a few years later, I ran through radar and one of the cops remembered me and gave me a break... a lecture, but no ticket. Cops sure have changed, us kids would probably would be screamed at and run off today.
Danville, Virginia's police department claims that it's to keep the cars from overheating.
Really? Two totally different models of police cruisers? Funny how these cars operate in far hotter locales without this problem. Is southern Virginia THAT HOT? Not to my knowledge.
Nothing new. New Orleans cops were destroying their cameras and Chicago has kept body cams out completely and are just now "testing" them.
Have you taken the time yet to read up on Laquan McDonald?
I'm telling you, it's critical to understanding the problem and how the police departments with the worst abuse reputations are being politically protected.
Do you routinely leave your car idling for hours on end?
When I take my son to tutoring, it sits idling for almost an hour with the AC going. This was four days a week this summer.
