The families were each paid an average of $1.8 million from the 9/11 Victim Fund. The challenge was and remains that many of the victims were very high earners.
Prior to 9/11, no one imagined that terrorists would fly airplanes into large buildings with the intent of causing buildings to collapse with people within, on live TV.
It remains a mystery to me that these 2 planes did not his at lower floors, thereby trapping a majority of people and causing a faster collapse. Pilot error or a desire to protract?
If these families went after Saudi Arabia exposing their backing of radical terrorists I would be supportive, but suing for more money 15 years later at the expense of the country.
They were successful at lobbying the release of classified information on Saudi Arabia but this action will damage the US and set a precedent.
And the other sad part of this is within two years, Obama will be blamed for all the lawsuits against the US. Or Hillary will, since she will be prez then.
Right-wingers will forget ALL about how this actually happened.
Oh no they won't. This will be laid at the feet of Republicans and it is our job to remind them of that. They want the lawsuits, then Republicans should be prepared to pay for them.

I'm glad you are willing to pay for these lawsuits. What is an NIC? I hope it's not as racist as it appears but I've never seen NIC before.
Doesn't it seem like Obama and like-minded others are talking out of both sides of their mouth? They're always talking about the global community and globalism, but suddenly their argument is this law will cause the US to lose sovereign immunity.
This is really quite simple. Barack Obama is the most effective enemy this country has ever faced. Here he was siding with the Saudis, who were the benefactors for the 9/11 terrorists, at our expense.
The Democrats have for the most part partnered with Obama on this sort of agenda pretty consistently during his time in office. But now one month before a national election, they are feeling the heat of accountability a little bit. Under pressure, they have decided to do the right thing for a change.
It will probably be in the thousands. An army of US lawyers will get on planes to talk people into suing US. They get their cut of course, which is why they'll do it.
The families got two million dollars each from the US government.
And now, 15 years later, they want more. Everyone feels for the families, but clearly this is more about money than anything else. This will help the families by putting an additional million, or two in their pockets, but the nation as whole is worse off, which is why the Congress is being very stupid about this.
The veto was overridden in the house. The families can now sue Saudi Arabia in US court if they can prove their connection, that in itself may be a problem. The other side of this is that residents in foreign countries may also sue the US for our actions supporting terrorists. It will be interesting to see if some residents of Nicaragua file a lawsuit regarding our support of terror since it is quite clearly the case, Reagan and other cabinet member's admittedly supported the Contras. Fairly easy to prove their case.

Marking a significant defeat for the White House, the House ensured the bill will become law after voting 348-77 to override Wednesday afternoon. This followed a 97-1 vote hours earlier in the Senate.
Despite last-ditch warnings from the Obama administration that the legislation could hurt national security and was “badly misguided,” lawmakers dismissed the concerns.
