The internet is owned by private companies that only care that the users buy the advertisers crap. This is somehow vastly better than government ownership and control.
Someone has to pay for all those resources. Better it be the people profiting from the web than taxpayers who may not.

How disappointed they're going to be as the internet rolls on without a hitch and they remain able to be ignorant in public for everyone to see. They'd MUCH rather it came to a screeching halt.

ICANN is an international consortium. It has been "housed" with the US, but the intention has always been that it should be a stand-alone organization.

There are a lot of people in this thread who do not understand what is happening and stating that other people do not know. It was the United States Internet, The UN did want control of it, in part because some of its members are threatened by the freedom of information.
There was no reason to change it other than to give some oppressive regimes a shot at limiting the freedom of information.

Americans are less than 10% of internet users. There are servers located in any number of countries, mostly owned by private companies. The underlying technology is well-understood and now nearly universal, if the internet disappeared tomorrow, any number of computer engineers in all parts of the world could start it up again. In what sense, then, does the internet belong to the US?

I understand you do not understand, which is why you should not have talked about other people not understanding. Anyone else is free to create their own Internet, and some have. Whether people decide to use a Chinese controlled Internet would have been interesting.
