Part of the operations of a store is to serve the public. If those accepting jobs there cannot fulfill their obligation, they should be canned. I said the same about the county clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses to gay couples.

It isn't up to the employees to set policy. It's up to those in charge or the business owner. NO large corporation would refuse to serve a segment of society. If small operations have owners that choose to do it, that's their business.

It is entirely up to them. As for a large corporation not refusing a segment of society, this happens all the time. In fact, Target for example has instituted polices that angered a large portion of the population and resulted in a lose of their stock value. So all businesses do it depending on a the issue and the owner/CEO/Boards decision.

All I meant to say is that Kroger can choose to fire her or back up the clerks decision. That is their choice.

We have no right to demand work from another.

You're arguing over semantics.

Not really, I stated the very thing before you responded to me.

In fact, I was a bit confused by your comment, so I simply reiterated my point.

The point is it is a Private Business, doesn't matter what we think. They can do as they please.

I would have filled 2 carts and loaded the check out belt with frozen food and meats and when they refused to ring it up, say OK and walk away.
Have fun re-stocking the shelves.

The employees need to be fired, that's all.

What makes you think Kroger clerks fought hard for civil rights?

Then I suggest they put up a sign in their front window that says: "We do not serve the general public."

And don't shovel that crapola about slavery.

You suggest? Or do you wish to mandate? They can do as they like, our only say is in if we do business with them, past that... we have no say.

As for slavery, if you force someone to serve you, it is called slavery and no amount of word smithing, good intentions, or collectivist mantra changes that. Either you respect the liberty of an individual to choose or you don't, there is no "condition" to such without oppression.
