My ancestors could have assimilated better, and should have simply out of respect and gratitude that this country accepted them and gave them freedom and opportunity. These immigrant groups were "bigoted" against each other as well, make no mistake. If they had truly appreciated what was offered to them they would have respected the existing culture and those who created it by adopting and embracing it. Muslims are less compatible with US culture than Catholics were back then, and I don't even blame the people for being unhappy when waves of Catholics took over certain areas. I could have lived without being raised in that religion.

It still was not easy, the 1900s immigrants DID cause problems and a lot of them were not respectful to the US culture. They came for a better life and they were of use to the 1% but they did drag down some areas turning them into slums and starting turf wars with other immigrants. Yes the situation now is much worse but any successful society always needs to be careful about immigration.
