Demographic questionnaires are a commonality in the USA. Though they were initially intended as a protection against discrimination, it seems like they also format minds into classifying individuals under arbitrary racial/ethnic categories. Do you think racial census makes the racial question overly present?
People will self identify as racial/ethnic identities and favor their identity regardless. I'd like a new classification, western European, non-Jewish.
In general, I think the federal government is just too big and meddlesome in general. I can empathize with libertarians that say they want the "government to be so small you can barely see it", like it was up until the early to mid 20th century.

One can certainly enjoy looking at race data on the U.S. Census without being a racist, though.

I don't have a problem with either one in theory at least. Social security was from the 1930s. I'm not a classical liberal/libertarian or neo-conservative.
This data helps keep us divided; therefore, the government finds it extremely useful.
As long as we are bickering among ourselves about race and other useless junk, they are less of a target of debate.
It's the identity group politics and policy and mass immigration itself that created the bickering. If the existing immigration law in 1964 was left in place and Democrats didn't do what they do, there wouldn't be a problem.
The only thing that promotes racism are racists and this country is full of them.
