This is a crazy story. I'll try to summarize and then put links below for people who want to read the whole story.
A "company" called Todd and Clare started a small web presence late last year. They claimed to be a dating service started in 2011. The pictures on their website turned out to be taken from other places.
They had no business license, no state sales tax ID, no trademark on their name or logo. Basically nothing you would expect from a normal business.
They start several social media accounts, but none of them have nay comments, and they have random "likes" that appear to be fake accounts.
The phone numbers listed on the website don't work, and the business address is a warehouse unit with no signs- so no office.
The claim to have the more than 100,000 customers around the world.
This "business" that has no actual business records, then joins the UN Global Compact. The UN Global Compact is an organization of businesses that claim to practice sustainability. It has more than 12,000 company members, and it's not hard to join.
After it joins the UNGC, it does a couple of strange things:
1. It contacts Assange and asks him to do a tongue and cheek commercial for them, offering to pay him $1 million that will come from a Russian account.
2. It uses the UNCG logo to put out a fake report that Assange has sent lewd pics to an 8 year old Canadian girl that was the sister of one of Todd & Clare's "customers" while she was in the Bahamas.
Assange turns down the $1 million offer. And in response to the strange report (complete with fake Bahamian police reports), the UNCG removes Todd and Clare from their list. The UN also accuses Todd and Clare of misusing their logos.
Buzzfeed has covered some of this story. Apparently they were asked to do a business profile on Todd and Clare (and in the process, they got suspicious of the business and dug deeper). So even the liberal Buzzfeed realized something was seriously wrong here.
And WikiLeaks has listed all the docs. Apparently there is some proof that Todd and Clare is connected with a Clinton SuperPac. So they set up this elaborate scheme to try to discredit Assange so WikiLeaks wouldn't hurt Clinton's campaign.
