Paul Ryan has had some ideas to drastically change both. Do you like Ryan's ideas? Will his ideas be implemented?

Quote:
Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI),has lots of ideas. He proposed raising the eligibility age for Medicare from the current 65 to 67, beginning in 2020 (in other words, those who are now 61 or younger would be hit) and capping overall government spending on the program (meaning seniors, not Uncle Sam could be on the hook for much of future cost growth). Under the Ryan plan, future retirees would essentially get a fixed voucher which they could use to buy Medicare insurance. Ryan has also supported limiting Social Security benefits by, among other things, raising the retirement age for full benefits to as high as 69 or 70.

There have been various plans bandied about over the DECADES to handle the boomer-bubble that is pushing through the pay-go system that is social security\medicare.

The issue is that every single prior legislature, president etc. have been aware of this issue and have generally taken a pass on putting into place needed changes in terms of age shifts, benefit changes or payroll tax increases etc.

So, in context it's probably important to note that doing nothing will have dire consequences but everyone wants the OTHER guy to fix it so they can run sqwaking to seniors about the evil (democrats or republicans) that are hurting those programs.

For example, in looking at your post you only mention cuts and changes without addressing the situation the programs are in. To have an honest discussion you need to frame the issue.

Personally, I doubt they do anything. Senators and Congressmen are too scared of the older voters and additional taxation is a non-starter as well. The can is just going to get kicked down the road some more.

I honestly get mixed messages about the solvency of both programs.

Not in a million years.

When Paul Ryan grabs that third rail and makes every light in America flicker, get ready for a wave of righteous anger like you've never seen before.

If Trump was smart (and I think he is), he'll side with the people and stop Ryan cold. If he doesn't - get ready for a blue tsunami in 2020...lol.

What will happen? Nothing.

Should some portions, such as disability, be reeled in and more closely scrutinized, and should Medicare fraud be discovered, and so severely punished nobody would want to try it again, good! We need to have it absolutely prosecuted.

But should ordinary citizens who aren't trying to get something for nothing be worried? Nope!

I think he would be setting the Republicans up to lose a very powerful voting bloc. That doesn't mean he won't do it, but I think his career in politics would be over.

More like a grey tsunami. Kiss, Florida bye bye in 2020.

Life expectancy is increasing. So raising the eligibility age for medicare and social security makes good sense. Ryan is on the right track here.

Both chronically insolvent for the past 2 decades. Must be fear mongering by every administration.

One partial solution is to raise the retirement age. harmless you'd think, but people close to retirement really believe they will be impacted when they will not be touched. Any change would be for people decades away from retirement.

Dems have concluded people are generally naive, confused and impressionable and directed their efforts to take advantage of that. 'we have to pass it to find out what is in it'.

Repubs aren't there yet. Their fault is thinking people are all intelligent.
