I was shocked to read this:

Quote:
Many of the victims died at the hands of priests, clergymen and nuns, according to some accounts by survivors, and the Rwandan government said many died in the churches where they sought refuge.
Quote:
The statement acknowledged that church members planned, aided and carried out the genocide, in which more than 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed by Hutu extremists.

Surprised?

You must not know the history of religion or more specifically the Catholic Church.

Tribalism. The lowest form of governance.

That it still exists in some parts of the world in the 20th/21st century is mind boggling.

This is stupid. It wasn't a war based in religion. Being Catholic or not didn't have anything to do with it.

I knew one person who was there as a journalist. From what I recall in talking to him it was mob insanity. Not from him, but my own guess is people took refuge in churches, the attackers (I forget which was which) probably saw opportunity with a bunch of sheep to slaughter, and my guess is the clergy stood by trying to save their own lives.

That's what the clergy always does in that case.

During the Third Reich, the church thought it more important to preserve the church rather than speak out against fascism.

Oh yes, the Church of Rome.

Where Christ and Caesar walk hand in hand.

Not the least bit surprised of Church involvement in the Rwanda genocide. Let's put paid forever the notion of faithful fulfillment of the vows in entering the religious life. The Catholic Church alone, routinely seems to represent the most despicable side of religious service. Name an act of wrongdoing or corruption within a Church, invariably the Church of Rome will be the culprit.
