Just to reiterate because these are important points to consider:
By removing California and it's growth rate, China would reach parity with the US in about 7 years and surpass the US in 8.
But more importantly it's the components of the California economy that are so vital to US dominance on the global economy and culture.
Just 3 examples:
1. 98% of the world's wireless devices run on 2 operating systems, iOS and Android. This is no small fete. As recently as the early 2000s the US was a laughing stock in telecommunications far behind Europe and Japan, but then Silicon Valley turned the entire industry on it's head by introducing the iPhone followed by Android which runs most foreign devices. That's a stunning win for the US.
2. Every day, billions of people access and distribute information freely on platforms based and controlled in California. From India to Japan to Brazil to France, the world has come to depend on the fact that they will be able to log on to our platforms( search engines, social media, etc) 24/7 to become informed or to spread a message. That is immensely powerful.
3. American pop culture is one of our nation's most powerful tools to distribute our values, ideals and morals to the world in such a way that foreigners are reminded that this lone superpower is not just a military minded land-everywhere I go, US celebrities and their projects are a topic of discussion. It's amazing how famous Beyonce and the Kardashians are or example. Hollywood is one of our most potent ambassadors of good will.
So California's economic and social footprint around the world is extremely wide reaching and affects the lives of most human beings every day.
The only other state that has that same kind of worldwide influence is New York with it's finance and media behemoths.
Furthermore, technology is attached to every other industry. For example, Silicon Valley is now also hub of the worldwide automotive research & development:

Didn't you just post all of this?
Remember when Blackberry was the predominate smart phone?
And everybody was on MySpace? And everybody wanted to work for Microsoft?
How many dot com stocks did you buy in the 90's?
It's fun to high five yourself when the market is hot, but eventually market saturation does catch up. Just ask Apple.
As we've seen with the last election, even Hollywood and the media's influence is apparenly waining.

I was with ya until number three. Hollywood distributes our values? Nix this ridiculous shpeel about Hollywood and you have a point. It reads like someone who is hopelessly pop culture centered. You sound like a hipster female blogger on Hello Giggles.

Right but you have failed to see that Silicon Valley has continued to reinvent itself with each wave of innovation-failure and resurgence is part of valley DNA. We arent afraid to mess up and try again.
And that resilience, and unparalleled access to capital, and unparalleled critical mass of talent, is what keeps techies flocking here from around the world.
Is that going to last forever? I cant say, my crystal ball is a little foggy right now, but for the foreseeable future, there is no US region that even comes close.
Silicon Valley's real competition is not domestic, it's China and India.

Not at all, but it's foolish to try and downplay the economic and cultural footprint CA has over the entire world.
How does Texas beat this?
