I mentioned this line to a co-worker and one of them said that is so bad for saying that.

I was thinking, isn't a sad fact? Every other place in the world, poor people are skinny.
Product of welfare.

End welfare and people will work. Hunger is a great motivator.

As said upthread, poor people in the USA don't starve (or don't need to starve) as they do in third world or even second world countries. The stick thin, poor starving folks you see on TV have no government assistance and the literally don't eat. In most other developed countries, poor people are given assistance and many buy the most convenient forms of food they can for as cheaply as they can.

I really don't understand what are you talking about "Expensive healthy foods" and "only rich can afford healthy lifestyle".
I was obese so I can compare.
Since changing my lifestyle my expenses dropped dramatically.
I'm not buying sweets, ice cream, pastries, sodas. I'm wasting less on gas as I try to walk as much as I can.
I'm now eating veggies and meats only and altogether it's about 50-60% of my previous expenses on food.

Chicken and lettuce are pretty damn cheap and you don't need a gym membership to exercise. I'm sure if we just gave them more money, they'll start eating cruelty free, locally sourced, organic quinoa from Whole Foods.

I see this thread headed towards a dark place. I have traveled to many countries and you can tell what class people belong to by their girth. Here in the US we have a bar that is set that is MUCH higher than in the third world. You will not be enjoying the good life as a poor person here but 9 bucks an hour (US) will make you a big cheese in Jamaica or Haiti. Perspective. Fast food and sugary cereals and soda are high calorie junk Thats is easy for the poor to purchase.

Once you drop below a certain level.....people gain weight. They can afford food, but its got to be cheap, and often unhealthy. Some due to genetics remain thin, and some due to careful thought, education, and effort remain thin. This is where the VAST majority of obese and morbidly obese folks come from.

Then you get the starving. This is where the "poor people should all be thin idea" comes from. Its a horrific bit of nonsense that anyone would think that this is where the poor should be.
Walking is free ...
