Trump did win 46.6%, but Clinton did not get a majority ether. (I voted for Stein).
The thing is though, the Republicans have a majority of the seats in the House and the Senate, and they will get more seats in the 2018 mid-term elections. Trump will nominate, and the Senate will confirm the next Supreme Court justice giving the court a 5-4 conservative lean. From what I've read, it seems that Trump may not consider running for a second term. If so, given the mood of the majority of current voters, who could the Democrats run that could win more votes in areas not named New York City and Los Angeles?
There is no question that Republicans will have complete control over the next four years. They will also have complete blame. Paul Ryan has been wanting to privatize Medicare and Social Security since forever and Trump will likely let him. I'm not a senior so whatever but there are a lot of seniors or soon to be seniors that saw what happened to privately held stocks when Enron crashed. Those people thought they were set for life and they walked away with nothing.
As for Medicare, 70 year olds shopping for a policy with a coupon and paying out of pocket for the rest may not like their out of pocket. Currently, Medicare recipients paid only a third of the benefits they receive. I see why Paul Ryan wants to privatize it, we taxpayers are supplementing seniors hugely. But current and future seniors may not like it so much.
Trump supporters that hate Medicaid may want to remember that a large amount of Medicaid also goes to seniors. Medicaid is the most common method of payment for 24 hour senior care and housing.
Trump is already receiving scrutiny with the potential for mixing personal business and government affairs, so that's another potential issue. I'm just saying, Trump supporters should get ready to be on the other side, because it's very easy to be on the side that finds fault.
That fact and 50 cents will get you coffee at Carol's Lakeside Restaurant in Cherokee Village Arkansas.
But it doesn't negate the fact that metropolitan areas are more aware than ever now that rural voters in less populated areas had more power than huge cities when both work and pay taxes. They are both taxpaying citizens but city votes had less value even though their number is greater. That kind of opposition is not something they will forget and it does matter when it comes to the level of support Trump will receive.
It is painful to watch the president they love hated by the other half of the country. It is easier to attack than defend. When one is on the side that dislikes the man in office, they can just sit by and insult.
Trump supporters are rejoicing now but trust me, they will grow tired of how much the president they like is disliked by over half of the country. Over half. They will grow weary of defending him. And if he privatizes Medicare and Social Security, a lot of unpleasantness will likely follow; only time will tell. For those that think they will get rich with Social Security privatization and will then have no problem affording private insurance policies at 70, Enron employees thought they would be rich too.
The electoral college may elect the president, but it doesn't negate that a much larger portion of the country did not want Trump. They are reminded daily that a small number of rural voters had more power than entire metropolitan areas. Both areas may work and pay taxes but saying those large areas have less say is not going to wear well when Trump makes those inevitable mistakes.
This post exhibits how well the classic divide and rule tactics are working. When will people admit our political system is completely rigged and has been for at least 50 years now? When will we stop arguing with each other over which brand of tyranny is "better" and decide to overthrow the tyrants? Oh, but that would require us moving way out of our comfort zones...can't have that!
The main thing Republicans will learn is that they wasted the last 6 years by being wimps. They could have stopped obama so many times but just folded like a wet rag. Maybe Trump will teach them to get a backbone and stand up for what they believe.

When you have a country this divided, citizen's priorities are different. Their education is different, their history, their world view, their relationships, their income, their wealth is all different.
Someone wrote here that rural voters just gave the West Coast a huge tax cut so rural voters could lose health coverage. It was an interesting way to put it and also true. Technically, the West Coast will happily take the tax cut, our economy is doing well. But we did want everyone to have health coverage and we didn't want seniors to lose Social Security and Medicare.

OK. So I've read all three pages that is this thread to date, including each of your posts. Each of your posts is filled with qualifiers - may, might, likely, yada yada and so forth.
What that tells me is what it should tell anyone reading this thread. You don't know what is going to happen in the future any more than you knew how the election was going to play out. Nobody does. This thread is simply an excuse to try to appear smug when you've really got............nuthin. Just one more excuse of a thread designed to trash Trump and those who voted for him.
