I visited Cuba in the late 1990s. East Berlin meets Calcutta. Fascinating in the way that Communist countries invariably are or were. Repressive as they inevitably are as well.

Socialismo o Muerta? I reckon I would take the latter.
The only former Communist country I have visited is Bulgaria. Nothing much to write home about for sure.

I visited Hungary, East Germany, and Cuba when they were (or are in Cuba's case) full blown Communist.

All share that "retro appeal" as Communism freezes places in time. Of course this does not originate from any love of the past. Rather it is that the command economy screws things up so badly that even obtaining paint is nearly impossible.

I recall walking by the Pavilion Granma in Havana. An honor guard replete with sunglasses, beret, and AK-47 could not take his eyes of my brand new Nikes.

I've always had a soft spot for a '57 Chevy. Plenty of those in Havana.

Tunisia is similar, even though it is not Communist. It was controlled by a dictator for most of the years we visited. Children begging in the streets. Plus as you say, a great desire for genuine Western goods like Nikes, even though the country is awash in fakes. They can recognise the genuine article from a glance......

A guy in the hotel couldn't take his eyes off my sneakers, so I gave them to him. Same with things like Whiskey. Many dinars would be offered for a bottle. I would just give it away as a tip to my restaurant waiter.

Things were opening up there slowly, after the overthrow of their dictator, but now it's all turned to ashes for those poor people.

I had a narrow escape, as we stayed at the hotel where over 30 tourists were murdered, only a couple of weeks before.

Glad you made it out alive. North Africa fascinates me. Someday...

Yep. Fella drove me to Hemingway's house in a 49 Hudson (I think). The old crate reeked of gas and he smoked like a fiend. But we made it.

Castro was a was as bad as, Hitler, Stalin, and Mao. He just lacked their power.

Make no mistake that this man was one of the biggest ****heads in history.

It's too bad he died of old age. He deserved something like ALS or an awful cancer. The firing squad was too good for that sack of ****. He's the type of person that makes you hope there is a heaven and hell because he's burning right now if there is.

I spit on that man's grave!!!!

Didn't like him huh?.......... It must sicken you that he died in a comfy bed at 90 years of age. Maybe he had a couple of women at his side sobbing as well........ There's no justice, and that's for sure.
