From your link. I know zero about airplanes but by 2020 wouldn't the technology be obsolete again?

"The U.S. Government Accountability Office estimated in March that the entire program would cost about $3.2 billion from the 2010 through 2020 fiscal years, including $2 billion for research and development."

The order for TWO of them is for 2.9 billion dollars TOTAL.

And, they haven't started building them yet.

AF1 is not just a regular plane. It can be refueled in flight and is designed so that the president can run the country from the air. There's a great deal of security and networking that goes into creating one of these. Should we just make the presidents all ride around in regular, old Town Cars next instead of their current cars with bulletproof glass and panels, special engine mods, special tires, etc?

He's just trying to make people think he's saving money. He probably just wants to use his own TRUMP jets to fly on official business so he can sell his brand while running the country. Ugh.

I DO have a problem if the Trump answer is to use his own personal aircraft, and as he has done with his hotels, catering services, security housing and transportation services, and bill the cost back to the government. That wreaks to me of self dealing.....

Not to mention the disgust of seeing the Trump emblem every time (which I am sure is what The Donald wants) the President goes anywhere.
No, the current AF1/2 is still serviceable. The articles all say that the proposed build he was talking about wouldn't even go into use until 2024.

It's for 2 planes. Trump got confused when they said Air Force One. I'm OK with it, though. Use the old planes. If he wants to cut wasteful aircraft spending, he should focus on the F-35.

For the reasons you stated, once inaugurated he won't be able to fly his own jet.

The 2.9 Billion doesn't actually cover the cost of building the 2 jets, 2.9 billion covers the engineering and planning to build these 2 jets with very large budget overruns expected as 2023 gets closer and they actually start building them.

They just haul it into E Systems for updating all the electronics.

Default Trump said NO way to BEOING

President-elect on Tuesday ripped Boeing for the cost of a new Air Force One plane, calling for the contract to be cancelled.
"Boeing is building a brand new 747 Air Force One for future presidents, but costs are out of control, more than $4 billion. Cancel order!" Trump tweeted.

As one who has his own plane, he should know what the reasonable cost should be.
