I have been trying to keep the subject of Syria at arms length since it just seemed like a total pile of human misery piled ontop of the remanents of the latest human misery.
But the last few months i see more and more news about Syrian forces nearly re-taking all the rebel areas of Aleppo.
Quote:
Pro-government forces are closest they have ever been to seizing entire city as rebels beg for five day ceasefire to allow civilians to leave.
The advances were the most significant of the past week and edged the fighting in Syria’s second city towards a final showdown in neighbourhoods where it all began for the besieged rebel groups four and a half years ago. Bashar al-Assad’s forces, backed heavily by militias that have been instrumental in shifting his fortunes in the war, are now the closest they have ever been to seizing the entirety of east Aleppo – a city central to the fate of the war.
The battlefield advances came as the US, Britain, France, Italy and Canada released a statement condemning both Russia and Syria for the “humanitarian disaster taking place before our very eyes” in Aleppo. There was no immediate response from either country, both of whom had rebuffed earlier demands for a ceasefire while vowing to crush the remaining opposition and claiming that any lull would allow rebels to regroup.
Did anything significant occur that would explain the tipping of balance of power there?
Did the rebels find their funding and weapon supplies dry up?
Did Assad's forces get handed some new weapons or better intel?
I'm wondering if this fiasco going to a be a minor mopping-up operation after Jan.
Or is this wishful thinking.
Yes. Assad will win. He aligned himself with a winner, i.e. Vladimir Putin.
In contrast, Obama & Hillary's foolish plans to beat Assad have failed. 10s of 1000s are also dead as a result. Nothing to show for it but despair and the rise of ISIS.
Ultimately, the USA doesn't know who to support and the Russians have an overwhelmingly strong reason to back Assad. So Assad will win even if the Russians have to bring in half their army to do it.

Obama is a failed president.
In the end the same will happen in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I am disappointed in Obama's foreign policy mistakes too (Libya and Syria).
But he does not own neocon ideology and strategy.
He was just their messenger.
I'm wondering if Trump will find himself walking in the same shoes.
We were backing the government opposition forces until Russia started backing the government & Obama folded like a wet rag so yes , Assad will regain complete control . Obama's foreign policy has been a complete disaster .
As rebel-held sections of Aleppo crumbled under Russian bombing this month, the Obama administration was secretly weighing plans to rush more firepower to CIA-backed units in *Syria.
The proposal, which involved weapons that might help those forces defend themselves against Russian aircraft and artillery, made its way onto the agenda of a recent meeting President Obama held with his national security team.
And that’s as far as it got. Neither approved nor rejected, the plan was left in a state of ambiguity that U.S. officials said reflects growing administration skepticism about escalating a covert CIA program that has trained and armed thousands of Syrian fighters over the past three years.
The operation has served as the centerpiece of the U.S. strategy to press Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step aside. But U.S. officials said there are growing doubts that even an expanded version could achieve that outcome because of Moscow’s intervention. Obama, officials said, now seems inclined to leave the fate of the CIA program up to the next occupant of the White House.
So as Iraq and Afghanistan were left unresolved for Obama to sort out, so too will Syria be for Trump.
At least the way out of Syria looks fairly straight forward.
Stop supporting the rebels.
Let Assad and Russia win.
Let Russia pay to rebuild the place etc.
Iraq & Afghanistan were pretty dang stable when Obama took office . He snatched defeat from the jaws of victory . His turn tail & run policies led to instability & ISIS & the resurgence of the Taliban .
