Boeing tells Trump new Air Force Ones will come in under $4B

Just weeks after President-elect Donald Trump publicly blasted aerospace pioneer Boeing for the anticipated cost of the next version of Air Force One, the company on Wednesday assured the commander in-waiting that the price tag would be less than he expected.

...
Wednesday, though, Boeing's chief executive told Trump that the cost for a pair of new modified presidential 747s is manageable.

"We're going to get it done for less than [$4 billion], and we're committed to working together to make sure that happens," Boeing's Dennis Muilenburg told Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida Wednesday, offering the president-elect a firm commitment on the cost.

Trump sounded open to the renewed assurances from Boeing that the planes could be delivered at an acceptable cost.

...
"It's a dance, you know. It's a little bit of a dance," Trump said. "We're going to get the costs down and we're going to do it beautifully."

Imagine that...

Do you think this would have occurred if no one complained about the cost? Of course not. Costs would have continued to rise and government would have rubber stamped it.

Do you think Boeing wanted to lose that contract? Heck no.

It certainly didn't happen under Obama.

And it certainly wouldn't happen under Hillary. She did, after all, waste $68M on "talent" at her rally in Cleveland.

Where might the Pentagon get a new jetliner from if not Boeing?

Given the Pentagon's long history of waste, fraud and inability to account for spending, I would be more inclined to hold their feet to the fire than Boeing. $640 toilet seats for General's is the tip of the iceberg.

First it's the congress not the potus that gets involved in those details, 2nd the cost will increase -because in 2 years the cost of everything would have risen... All BS - marketing strategy

There was never a contract for $4 billion, so it was easy for them to say "sure, we'll keep it under $4B". That's all it took for them to shut him up.

The only realistic choices are get a new 747, keep the old ones, or get new 747s with dumbed down bells and whistles. Could probably save a few hundred million simply not making the wiring nuclear attack proof.

Even Iron Maiden is rocking a private 747, so it would be a national insult not to at least outdo a 1980s has-been metal band.

They could remove all the seating to save money. Standing room only, with some bars to hold on to, like that have in subways.

Sorry, this is Trump caveing. $3.9 trillion is still way too much. Boeing said nothing. If you don't get it in writing, you don't have squat.

The current Air Force One aircraft are now so old and obsolete parts for them are no longer being made. All the security devices, computers, and all the rest are also obsolete and offer very little security any more.

The only aircraft that are suitable for flying the President and his cabinet are the Boeing 747 and the Airbus A380.
Since the Airbus is European, using all European parts, with all its blueprints held in Europe, where all the security and aircraft counter-measures would also be designed and made, the strategic choice of aircraft supply fell to Boeing. Naturally, as the Boeing is an all-American design, using U.S. parts, and U.S. security, communications and electronic countermeasures.

The present planes were delivered in 1989. There were supposed to be 3 in total, but one was never built.

Now, if one breaks down, and the other is in deep overhaul, there is nothing available to fly the President, his staff, the Pentagon staff, the SS and Marine security contingents, and the service staff to where the President needs to be, fast.

So far, this has never happened, but the chances of it happening grow greater ever year, and the planes have a lot of air time on them. Continuing to fly them will require hundreds of new custom-made parts to be made because there are no stock parts left.
And the security problems for the humans, the communications, and all the rest grow more vulnerable with every flight.

This was just one more thing Trump knew nothing of and shot his mouth off too quickly about. The President's helicopter fleet is also obsolescent, and was supposed to have been replaced during Obama's first term, but Obama killed the new fleet at a time when the government was in deep financial crisis.

The helos are next up, and by the time the funding becomes available, will be just as worn-out and vulnerable as the old 747s are now.

The last thing America needs is for one of either to be shot down, or as badly, have it compromised in some way we don't realize. Replacing the aircraft is an expense that comes along with being the most powerful nation on the planet.

Since it will cost us $1 billion a year to protect Melania in New York City, Trump could save enough money by making her move into the White House to pay for the new 747s, and they'll still be good for the next couple of decades, not just next year.
