After sweeping the election 12 years ago, the first order of House business was to weaken ethics rules.
The current rules were created in 2008 following a series of corruption scandals involving house members and lobbyists.
Now here we have House Republicans meeting in private and voting 119 to 74 to gut ethics rules. No roll call so we'll never know which ones thought this was a swell idea. By all accounts, GOP leaders opposed it.
Media pushback was immediate. No shortage of Republican Senators took to the airwaves condemning the intention. Trump's tweet was curious, more about timing than anything else.
Why are Congressmen meeting in private and voting on anything without a roll call? That is a slippery slope no matter who holds the majority.
Ha! - he sent his mouthpiece out to defend this travesty, then changed his mind? Does that woman have a shred of dignity left?
She wouldn't be there in the first place, if she had a shred of dignity. But it's to the credit of Ryan, McCarthy and Trump, that they voiced their opposition to this so-obvious blunder, by a small group of republican representatives, to attempt to scuttle the powers of the Independent Ethics Panel. What a gift that would have been to the opposition, if they had been able to slip it past, hidden inside the larger rules package. Actually, Trump flipped from his earlier approval of it, after he had taken flack from all sides. This whole regime is going to play like one of Fellini's surrealistic comedies.
The illusion of unlimited power, by this wrecking crew, is getting its wings clipped, right from the beginning. The failure of Ryan and McCarthy, to have enough influence to block it at first, portends the coming in-fighting that will weaken and render ineffective, what might have seemed a slam-dunk of congressional control. This is true Karma, that their ill-gotten elections will result in a Tower of Babel-like scattering of power.

Trump's tweet totally called them out and made them look foolish so they dropped it.
Well, here are the names of TWO swamp dwellers:
1. Rep Bob Goodlatte from Virginia's 6th district. He's been in Congress for 24 years. He's chairman of the Judicial Committee. Conducted vote on a bank holiday, at night and behind closed doors. If that doesn't say CROOK, I don't know what does.
He needs to be VOTED OUT. They can choose another republican, I don't care. But that guy has to go.
2. Rep Marsha Blackburn from Tennessee's 7th district. I saw her defending getting rid of the congressional ethics office during an interview on BBC. Yes, I watch the BBC. They have nice manners, they don't scream. Ms Blackburn is in the pocket of Comcast communications. She's a CROOK.
If you want to help the Donald DRAIN THE SWAMP, follow and expose the swamp dwellers. They need to be voted out.
So, do something positive instead of gossiping about yesterday's news (Obama, etc).
EXPOSE THE SWAMP DWELLERS. Doesn't matter what party. They need to be voted out
Proof that Congressional Republican weenies will do anything to please their Massa.
No
Proof that the Republican Conress' first priority is to LINE THEIR POCKETS.
They'all a bunch of crooks. How stupid can you be to want to gut the congressional ethics office and then bring back earmarks (great opportunities for graft/bribes).
A LEADER smacks the children's butts and they straighten up....amazing how a REAL LEADER can get things done that quickly huh?
All Trump said was that it shouldn't be the #1 priority. The timing isn't right. But he doesn't like the ethics panel, either.
It should tell you something that they want to do away with, or significantly weaken, the one thing that oversees their behavior. Different rules for the swamp, apparently.
