Might as well put them to work and offset their costs.

Problem is it is a morally problematic thin line between "work" and slavery when you have a captive workforce that can be forced to work and are not payed. It also creates a strong incentive for the state to keep "Bad" laws that feed otherwise harmless people into the system.

So, if we:
Get rid of jail time for victimless crimes
and/or
Make the choice to work voluntary and pay at least a minimum wage salary minus the costs of their room and board into an escrow or something (Just because a private prison is extracting labor from their prisoners, doesn't mean they should be entitled to a "free" workforce, it is anti competitive to companies that do not have access to the same pool of (basically)slaves)

Then I wouldn't have a problem with it. Hell, the wages for prisoners who committed violent crimes or theft could be used as compensation for their victims.

The liberals will scream bloody murder. But the thing is, the prisoners will love it. To get out, to do something with their hands. I would suspect having a chance to work will be a privilege, not a burden.

I also believe that prisoners should be used to do the jobs of illegal immigrants once we get them out of the country.

Who wouldn't love a chance to pick fruit in California instead of sitting in a cell all day?

Actually, if you ask prisoners, if the work is not too bad (IE mucking poo), many will happily do it to make time pass. Note these were not gang bangers or killers. Been a while, IIRC of the two I recall, one was a car thief and the other did time for bad checks. Yea this was a decade ago.

Source:worked with former prisoners as their super on the outside on projects. Hired as temps.

The jails already do it. That's all the orange vests picking up trash roadside.

I'd rather see law abiding welfare recipients working for what they get than have criminals build something important to national security. Resources should be spent teaching law abiding people who need skills to get better jobs before spending them on criminals.

Do convicts need more useful skills too? Probably but should they be rewarded with free training before people who haven't broken the law?

I have to agree with this. Put them to work and pay them minimum wage keeping some for room and board and putting the rest away in an account for them or use it for compensation for crimes committed or what ever.
