And he says that the historic peace deal struck following the Second World War is on the brink of collapse as both continents diverge politically.
Mr Fischer, 68, served as the second longest-serving foreign minister in German postwar history in the cabinet of Gerhard Schröder from 1998 to 2005.
And while he represents the Green party he has been a staunch supporter of three-term Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Indeed last year he came to the defence of Mrs Merkel over her disastrous migration policy insisting she "deserves respect".
Now he's warning that the entire foundations of The West are at breaking point thanks to the differences in political opinion.
Forebodingly he also warned that "the crypts of nationalism have been opened" that their "they will once again release their demons upon the continent."
The "crypts of nationalism have been opened"? Who the hell talks like that? What a pompous A-hole.
If the "crypts of nationalism" have indeed been opened, and "demons unleashed" in Europe, look no further than Mad Cow Merkel as the evil gatekeeper who unlocked the crypt and let the demons out.
I don't understand how any of these swinish Eurocrats could think that allowing millions upon millions of unassimilatable foreigners who fanatically adhere to a religion that's diametrically opposed to every single liberal principle they allegedly believe in will end in any way other than war, chaos and genocide. We should no longer feel any obligation to protect these people, especially since they are their own worst enemy. Screw them!

I earned my BA in history, so yes, I fully understand the implications of his remark. However, that doesn't make him sound any less like a puffed-up, sententious douche. Imagine walking into a restaurant and bellowing "I am hungry! Unleash the hounds of culinary excellence and let's feast!!". C'mon!
Global trade requires all countries work within their borders to harness the efficiency. By letting a large group of rabid uncivilized people into 1st world countries you are asking for zombie apocalypse.
I read the full article, because it's interesting to see what those outside America are thinking, but in this case, he isn't thinking. He's blasting the US for its foreign policy and stating that Trump will be disastrous, yet at the same time telling us Europe needs the US. Sounds like he has some conflicting ideas. And if Europe is in such dire need of the US, it's because of their own actions. Maybe they should solve their own problems.

Misunderstood you there - if it's just form, then yes, sounds a bit Wagnerian. Could be a translation thing.

I'd completely do that, truth be told.
