...why it is so important to the Democratic Party to turn a blind eye to illegal immigration? Seriously - why do the Democrats fight so hard to allow illegal immigrants to stay? What are the benefits, and do those benefits outweigh the importance of a country having secure national borders?

Note that I'm not talking about the wall here, or whether that is a good idea or for that matter even feasible. I just want to know why the Democratic Party (and so many individual liberals) want our country to completely ignore its own immigration laws. Can anyone explain it? I know the snarky "because liberals are scum" comments are inevitable, but for the sake of a somewhat productive discussion I hope people keep that nonsense to a minimum.

This liberal is fine with enforcing immigration laws.

I wish we had legal penalties for employers. Republicans stripped it from Reagan's amnesty bill and have strangely enough never brought it up again in all these years.

If everyone who employed illegal workers had their assets frozen until a complete investigation was conducted and a suitable fine assessed, it would stop in heartbeat.

The well-to-do love cheap illegal labor and it lowers the bar for legal labor. There's no advantage for the working class. None whatsoever.

Republicans carry on about the evils of illegal immigration, but they could have passed such a law any time within the last six years. Lot cheaper and more effective than that ridiculous wall.

I doubt President Obama would have vetoed it. He was hot on the trail of getting those with felonies out of the country.

Water under the bridge now. But Republicans could have that in place by Feb. 1st.

Wonder why they don't?

The majority of liberals care about some of the kids who came here who have assimilated well. Outside of that most dont care.

Know who cares? Business. So this isn't a liberal thing so much as political theater to get money thing I think.

"I read it in some right wing paper, so it must be true !"

Here is my take on the illegal/legal situation. The two parties simply have two very different views on how we want our county to be. Conservatives see new people coming in, legal or otherwise, as an attack on our way of life. Democrats (call them liberal if you wish) feel America should be all inclusive and diverse.

ALL OF US, unless you are American Indian, came from somewhere else, and, if your forefathers were prohibited from coming here, you would be speaking some other language right now. Some people feel, "We got our piece of the pie, now let's shut the door so no one else can come in." People from other lands contribute to America and enrich our country. To stop them from coming and becoming part of America is very shortsighted and wrong.

Hope that helps clear up some of the reasons we do not see new people coming in akin to the Black Plague.

Absurd. Idiot posts do no good. Does the right really need this sort of idiocy to feel righteous or something?

Illegal immigration is absolutely wrong, evil and should not have happened. A connivance between the Republicans and The Democrats allowed it to continue after the Reagan Amnesty. That was a terribly stupid thing... but our government did it.

Now we simply are faced with the fact that too many have entered and are too well embedded into our society. It is not that it is good for them to remain. It is there is no other viable option.

To remove them would cost tens of billions of dollars over more than a decade and, at the end, we end up with a major federal department whose charter is gone. You really think we will then layoff tens of thousands of federal employees?

And it may well not work. It will at the last few million become very difficult as the remaining are shielded by relatives, friends and neighbors.

So overall the rational thing to do is reduce the illegal population to perhaps half a million and then rigorously enforce the immigration laws. That includes whatever is needed to control the border though control of employment is probably far more important. And simply following up that all who enter leave...a capability we do not have.

To gone on as we have is simply insane. The antis claim we are going to send them all home. Has not the last 30 years convinced us this is not going to happen? But hope (and idiocy) spring eternal. "Why sure we just need to be a little mean and they will all leave." Yeah right. And Trump will bring back two million good middle class jobs in his first six months. Don't hold your breath.
