GM has chosen a day where they will be sure their latest action will be hidden in the news. It is laying off 2,000 blue collar factory workers tomorrow, 1/20/2017, Inauguration Day. The layoffs will be in Ohio and Michigan.

Dear Trump: Please save my GM factory job in Lordstown, Ohio - Jan. 18, 2017

(This is separate from a different announcement by GM that it is ADDING 5,000 jobs to its finance and tech offices. They are keeping another 1,950 jobs in blue collar jobs that had been going to Mexico or had already gone to Mexico. GM to invest $1 billion in U.S. plants, add or keep 7,000 jobs - Jan. 17, 2017)

So, it ends up being about even steven for factory workers, with 2,000 being laid off and 1,950 being retained and moved back from Mexico or not moved to Mexico.

The new jobs are 5,000 jobs in finance and tech offices of GM.

(Running total: 5.8M jobs to match the last 8 years; Only 5,794,500 Million more jobs to go, counting the 5,000 here and the 500 Carrier jobs)

Ultimately Trump can only help influence GM's business decisions through various financial incentives/disincentives.

Seeing these aren't in place yet, I'd imagine there would be some last minute shifting of things.

Just what we needed 5.8M Walmart greeters and McDees hamburger flipping jobs while the middle class was all but decimated

Trump better save these folks factory. Nothing more worse than super predator blacks and angry uneducated white men with pitchforks yelling like a bunch of wild dogs, because they are out of a job.

I feel sorry for those GM workers who are losing their jobs, but the reality is, those $25 an hour assembly line jobs are not going to come back. The only reason people were paid big money for jobs that a $10 an hour worker could do is unions.

Automation, ie robots are replacing workers, and doing a better job at it. Trump is facing an uphill battle in trying to bring auto jobs back to America, those jobs are simply not there now, and even less in the future.

Automakers were able to survive with manual labor in other countries, but can not justify these high paid semi skilled workers in America any longer. The guy in the story was making $25 an hour installing brake lines.........one of the easiest mechanical jobs that exists. That is why GM is having to lay so many off.

The market currently seems to favor suvs like CRVs, RAV4s and the like. GM and maybe Ford has mentioned that their passenger car factories were idling at some point because of these market trends.

The layoffs at the Lordstown plant were announced MONTHS ago and the reason is falling sales of the Chevy Cruze.

When gas prices are low, people buy more trucks and SUVS.

There, right there you hit the nail on the head my friend.

Trend for US auto market is moving to cross overs and SUVs/light trucks over cars. As such GM and other automakers are responding.
