Hillary Clinton: 'Failure' to Help Syrian Rebels Led to the Rise of ISIS - The Atlantic

In this 2014 article the writer insists that ex-Secretary Clinton tries to pursuade Obama to put more ground game together to help the rebels over-throw Assad. Instead Obama did not pursue her suggestion and remain on the sidelines throughout the fighting which led to the rebels fleeing Syria and joining forces with another group which later became ISIS.

Many rebels were encouraged butwere fooled thinking that Obama was gonna send in ground troops but didn't.

This of course allowed Assad to carry out his atrocities in Syria against all those that supported the rebels.

Now in the aftermath, millions of refugees are pouring out of Syria and into Europe. I'm afraid Angel Merkel along with other progressives will be booted out of power soon.

America did not take in as many refugees we are less affected by the huge outpours of refugees but if we accepted 1million Syrians I'm very sure that there will be calls for the Democrats to retract their positions.

It's easy to say and offer to do charitible things but it's different when you have to offer and provide.

The mess would go a long way toward cleaning up if we left Assad alone or even backed him somewhat. Minus any ground forces for sure. Let him put a beat down on things and resume an iron fist if he wants. Beats the alternative of another Islamic theocracy. Let the place stabilize itself. haven't we learned what deposing dictators over there gets us yet? Maybe Russia has the right idea.

The US has been arming groups in the middle east for a long time. These groups have operated under many names, they just happen to be calling themselves ISIS now.

The US under Bush/Cheney, and Obama/Clinton/Kerry armed the groups terrorising the middle east, including in Syria.

Even the democrat Tulsi Gabbard just said after her visit to Syria, that the US was arming the terror groups that have been murdering civilians in Syria.

It must be nice to be a fact-free right-winger.

The latest mess in the Middle East was created when that bumbling idiot George "Dubya" Bush and his oil-hungry cronies toppled Iraq and created a lawless region in which terrorist cells could operate. This was followed up by 6 out of the past 8 years of Republican control of Congress and their utter refusal to do anything useful because they were too busy trying to make health care more expensive and strip civil rights away from various minorities. It's actually amazing that we were able to muster the resources to kill Osama, a guy that old Bumbler Bush couldn't find for 8 years.

As for Syria itself, no matter what Obama did, the far-right whined about it. More troops or less, nothing would please them, and now they have the hypocritical nerve to try to blame this on Obama and Hillary even though it was the Republicans who refused to do anything about the problems in the Middle East AFTER creating the worst of them.

Finally, unless you're living in some alternate fantasy world, Obama could not have fixed the problems himself; even as Commander in Chief, he doesn't get to basically do whatever he wants, and Congress funds the wars and the military. It's even crazier to blame Hillary since she literally had no ability to fix the problem in Syria.

As for Trump cleaning things up, yeah, right. Because banning Muslims from entering the US is magically going to bring peace to the Middle East. Nobody can be that stupid.

I hope that Tulsi Gabbard has some sway within the Trump Administration. She wants the US to have more diplomatic relations with Assad. Arming rebels has been a terrible policy (one embraced by Obama and Clinton).

The single dumbest mistake we made in the region was the invasion of Iraq. Saddam was an annoying, but adequate check on both Iran and Al-Qaeda. Iran sweeped Iraq right from underneath the American's feet via their appeal to Baghdad's Shi'a majority. This coupled with a complete ban of ex-Saddam baathists gave way for an extreme Sunni response, namely ISIS.

ISIS saw the opportunity in Syria when chaos started occurring upon the Arab Spring. And here we are.

Who would fill the void with Assad gone?

Why can't we find moderate rebels in Syria?

How come several terrorist groups including ISIS keep getting the weapons that Obama pours into the region?

Who has filled the void of Saddam in Iraq due to GWB?

Who has filled the void of Gaddafi in Libya from Obama?

Obama has poured free tax-payer-funded weapons into Syria - and ISIS has benefitted the most from Obama's Weapons Dispersal Programs.

Assad is bad, but he is better and more stable than ISIS. Assad was more secular and protected religious minorities far more than these rebels like ISIS would. Also, Obama backing the rebels (aka ISIS) has ticked off Russia, as they have an interest against ISIS and for Assad (warm water port for Russia in Syria).

yu guys might want to check YOUR facts. one of the reasons we invaded iraq was because saddam was allowing terrorist groups to set up training camps in iraq.

Syria cannot be cleaned up.

All Trump will do is get more American boys killed, and his intervention will only cause the civil war to continue on longer.

It is a repeat of the war in Lebanon, the civil war that went on for over 12 years, with and without foreign intervention. By the end, the Lebanese were so exhausted and depleted by the war that Syria had no trouble coming in and ending it to their own benefit.

That's the way this area of the world works. The more meddling that comes from the outside, the more stuck the meddlers are in the tar pit.

Do we really want another 15 years of perpetual war there, with no victory possible and no end in sight? After we once armed Al Quida because we thought they were our 'good rebels' and would always be on our side? After we won the fight in Iraq and lost the war? For the second time after Viet Nam squandered our treasury?

We are already lost in the china shop, so there will be a teacup that is broken. But we don't yet own the store from the breaking of a teacup. Once we break the china cupboard, we are in for good with no way out except mass evacuation.

And since Trump won't allow any Syrians who help us come here in refuge, we will get no help when we go in. But our guys will be shot at by all sides, all the time, nonstop, until we beat feet and split.
