Because we have an aging population and immigration is the only reason our population is growing at all. Without immigration we have a decreasing number of working age people to support services for an ever increasing number of retirees. Even if immigration continues at the current pace, there's vast sections of the country that are projected to be shrinking in population with far too many old people and not enough workers to support them, either in the form of taxes to support social services programs or in the form of labor providing services they will need. Read "Diversity Explosion" by William Frey, especially about the portions of the country that have neither the influx of immigrants, nor the movement of newcomers from other states that he refers to as "the Heartland."

The 3 million extra popular votes for Hillary were mostly from Calif. No surprise there since we are a liberal state with the most illegal aliens in the nation and their supporters. Calif. does not represent the pulse of the nation.
