So you are ok with someone that is clinically diagnosed as mentally ill, to own and posses firearms? I'm at a loss for an argument / counterpoint, because this POV is ... indefensible ?
The statement / question pretty much answers itself.
You know nothing about mental health if you actually believe most or even very many of those with a mental health issue are a danger so society. Heck more than half the people around you could by one definition or another be deemed to have a mental health issue, do they attack you, do they pose a threat, nope.

I think it depends on the individual. Am I okay with someone that is clinically diagnosed as mentally ill to own and posses firearms? It depends on the individual.
As far as I know the current legal standard is that only those who have been adjudicated as mentally incompetent can be prevented from owning guns, or confined involuntarily to a mental institution. Generally speaking one doesn't get declared insane by a court of law unless one is an active danger to society.
Are you okay with someone that is clinically diagnosed as mentally ill using kitchen knives? can they have jobs? Can they be productive members of the society? Why don't you tell me.
Isn't for a doctor to determine, and not some government bureaucrat?
AFAIK, if you were involuntary admitted to a psychiatric ward, you lost your right to own firearms. You also lose your right if you were implicated in a domestic violence situation
Seems weird that people who use drugs can't own a weapon unless you are mentally ill. Many mentally ill people are on drugs but we call them "medication."

The left depends on the ignorance of their base to further their agenda.
It doesn't take much for some one to be diagnosed as "mentally ill" which is why I left the field of psychology. It is a utterly imperfect science.
This was a MAJOR gun-grab where the government used a scarlet letter to prevent many, many peoeol from excercising their rights. This was especially impacting to veterans - who after defending our country with GUNS - came home and had their 2nd amendment rights taken away b/c they had anxiety, sleep disorders, etc.
You are wrong on every point and I love our Veterans but some do not deserve the right to have guns if they are not mentally capable.
It is not for the government to decide who is mentally ill enough to take away rights. That is for physicians and the court. That is how it should work in this country.
