I don’t remember them happening to this degree during Obama’s 1st term, although I wasn’t paying as much attention then. It definitely didn’t happen for trump in 2016.
I think most people are celebrating that trump is gone rather than Biden winning.
And it wasn't just in cities across the USA. It happened all around the world. Church bells rang in Paris and fireworks were being shot off in London, Berlin, and Edinburgh.
I doubt all of these are as organic as one would leave you to believe. Just look at turnout for some of Biden's events. And even if they hate Trump it probably would be social media activity not celebrations with signs. Leaders still must show they have support and followers.
This could all be part of narrative building ie Biden won don't question it and those who do are party poopers. Also lays the ground work for protests if Trump progresses/gains votes in recounts. Ground work for fabricated outrage.

I’ve never seen this kind of US and worldwide celebration before. South Park mocked that there was such in 2008, but it wasn’t real. This time it is. Days, maybe weeks of celebration? Who knows.

Seriously?? I remember coworkers coming into work having not gone to sleep because they were celebrating all night.

No question about that. That is the reason many of us voted for him, but not out there yelling "RAH RAH Biden won"!
The point has always been to find a candidate that could beat Trump, not find a great candidate for President. That's probably not possible anymore. It's been lesser-of-two-evils for a long, long time.
Although, the fact that our country has progressed enough to vote in a woman for the No. 2 spot has added a spark.
