Equally cute, but kittens are easier to train. Although it takes longer to train a puppy, they stay trained. Cats eventually degenerate into pissing in your laundry baskets and on your bathroom rugs.

Neither. I'm most partial to ducklings. Nothing is cuter than ducklings.

Dogs eat out of the cat' litter box. At least that's what their owners tell me

I would say kittens are cuter for this reason.

My dog would eat cat poop out of the cat litter box and then try to lick us...

Kittens are a lot easier so it would depend on the type of challenge you were up for, what is cuteness worth? lol

Its puppies.

But it can't be anykind of puppy--we don't want one that is only for eating free kibble and lounging on the couch.

They need to have a skill and contribute something to the yard.

Secure the borders, neuter the 1/2 breeds, starve the weak and wounded. Remove the strays from the yard.

Inter-breeding is not good for our true lineage and gene pool. It only dilutes it.

As a side note

My personal preference --- Old English Sheepdogs and Boxers.

Dogs do eat out of the litter box, but cats kill mice and other small living things, and sometimes toy with them first.
